ok my landy a 1989 2.5 td 90 started blowing out white smoke after taking her through a river so i thought it had taken on some water it was running like a bag of bolts as well more so when cold the smoke was really bad on start up but when it gets going it seems the more load the engine is under the less smoke there is so i took it to my mates garage he did a pressure test on it and said the head gasket had gone which it had and the water pump and the radiator and the injectors had seen better days as well also had the head skimmed and the value clearances done so it was all replaced which as you can imagine cost a few quid so when it was all back together you guested it still blowing out smoke so he drained the tank to see if the fuel had been contaminated there was a little water in there but still its blowing smoke it drives so much better but its driveing me mad should i just live with it or try and find the cause any ideas cherrs mark.

fuel injection pump set up wrong causing over-fueling?

does it mostly occur when you boot it? if you apply gentle pressure to the acc. pedal does it smoke less?

Have you drained any water out of the fuel filter? Have you done a pressure test since doing the head, could the rings or bores be knackered.

at idle it smokes like a trooper the more load on the engine the less smoke seems to be when im up to about third gear with a bit of heat in the engine the smoke is all but gone

all the filters where replaced air fuel etc pressure done and all was good and the rings were all done as well cheers .

is the injector pump something i could do or would it need to go to a specialist thanks for all the all the advice

Question is, the did the engine suck in a dollop of water into a cylinder?

If it did, chances are it may have over-compressed and bent a con-rod, so that the piston does not now come all the way up, hence poor compression there, and heaps of white sort of smelly smoke.

Every time after an engine gets into water, if the head comes off the motor should be turned over and each piston brought to top dead centre, and each piston can be seen to be - or NOT to be - all the way up. About 40/50 thou or a millimetre down and you have a major problem.

The cure is a new conrod.

If you are VERY careful, you can measure piston heights through the injector hole, or by pressing down on a valve.

cheers for all the advice they rebuilt the cylinder head and re cut and grind all 8 inlet and exhaust valves they did all the clearances im thinking injector pump anymore ideas welcome this is my pride and joy i just want her back how she used to be.

Well, sounds like they did the standard basics but may have dropped short on a skilful TUNE and setup of the injection timing.

Have a search for the threads on fine-tuning injection pump timing.

You can't be far away from having a good runner.

Meantime make absolutely sure that all the valves have clearance of about 0.010", 0.25mm. Even one tight valve can cause exactly the problems you describe. For all the time it takes ..... be sure.
