hey guys. noticed my water temp guage wasnt getting a reading so opened up the coolant and noticed it was dry. filled it up and see it all ****ing out on the floor. went down to the local landrover specialists and the mechanic did some kind of pumping pressure test and told me my water pump is ****ed. got quoted £65 plus vat for pump and £75 plus vat for labour. its really money i dont have atm. has anybody replaced a water pump themselves before? if so is it a hard job. mechanic mentioned removing the fan and belt and you can get to it then.

its a ****-easy job - most difficult bit will be removing that crappy viscous fan.

Even Nelly cud do it. - now theres a thought :D.
 
I did one on my v8 Range and I agree the worst part was getting bleedin' fan off - was jammed solid. But I found it's possible (but not advisable if you can avoid it) to get water pump off with the fan still attached if worst case comes to worst...
I reckon you'll also be able to get a pump a lot cheaper than £65 from Paddock or Lrdirect.
Plus you'll want to get some hylomar and make sure you get a new gasket with the pump. I'm rubbish with cars and it took me about 2 hours to take it apart and put it back togther. I did have one bolt left over which was worrying. That went in the bushes.
 
Just done my TD3 no probs you dont need to remove the fan just the pullys obv water pump and pwr steering its tight but not 2 bad 2/3 hours

right got everything off i.e fan, fan cover, fan belt and all but 1 of the water pump bolts. the last one is rounded and i dont know how i can get it off. anybody got any advice.

weld a new (big) nut onto the rounded one - or grind the rounded one orf and then weld a bit of bar to the stud and use the bar to crack it free

thats assuming you've got either a welding or a grinder
 
got a grinder, no welder unfortunately :(

grind the head off, you should then be able to remove the pump - and then wind a couple of nuts down onto the stud, lock them together then use the bottom one to undo it

or - if you have a thin slitting wheel cut a thin slot in the stud to fit a good sized screwdriver (or bit of flat bar)
 
Ya got two choices then my friend.

Find someone close who's got a welder you can borrow or.....
the brute force n ignorance technique.

i.e. Mole grips done up as tight as somethink very tight. ;) :D

grind a couple of flats on the rounded nut (if there is enough metal left) so you can get a small spanner on it

thermal shock it before you try to undone it

Have to agree with Sean when I stop to think about it seriously.

Its been rounded off therefor it may well be bl**dy tight and someone may have used mole grips before.
 
no worries, ive done it. got a 3/8 imperial spanner, smacked that onto head with hammer and made a new head size:) bugger me that was stiff. the bolt was so rusty. off to get a new bolt now and wait for my water pump from paddocks which should have been here. payed extra for express delivery too :(
 
oops forgot to add i also used my bosch head gun to heat it up aswell as the bodged new head size which seemed to help. cheers for your advice guys although i didnt realise you had wrote it till i had finished :D
