Still think you should keep it and investigate yourself and learn how to fix it.

It seems that it would be to your benefit to know of all these tests and their results before you throw in the towel. You should call Clare and ask.
Cutting to the chase here. What is the damage?The mechanic that stripped it had a full blown conversation with me, and told me there's engine damage and Land Rovers only recommendation is to replace the engine.

They don't know for definite because they weren't willing to strip it down far enough to tell exactly because they wouldn't repair the damage, only replace the engine. He did tell me that an independent would strip it and possible repair the damage if it was possible, but that his work was now done unless off course I wanted to hand over £10,500. Funny bastard.

I think your current disco will be an easy fix but if you're not even willing to get a second opinion (and by that I mean someone off the forum who wont try and fleece you for every single penny which, let's face it, all garages do) then I think biggeeeee is right and LRs are definitely not for you. They're not a maintenance free vehicle. None of them are.
You need a Toyota.You've hit the nail on the head. I was ripped off when I bought it. 2 weeks later it broke down. AA attended and towed me to a LR specialist who said he plugged and got a mid fire reading on no.5. He cleared the code told me it was fine, broke down 20 mins later. He didn't take my calls. Got it towed to another LR specialist who replaced crank sensor but ignored diagnostic reading of mis Fire on no. 5. So it broke down again. This time with my family in the car with me.
I've previously asked on here for a recommendation of a trust worthy mechanic that would look after my car, but to no avail.
Why would you take a 12 year old vehicle to a Main Dealer?
They don't have mechanics, they have technicians, who only replace parts.
More money than sense!
