I brought my Freelander 7 months ago, when my main car developed a problem and I needed something to get me to work whilst I was saving up for the repair.
I've fitted a DVD with reversing camera, and Heated leather seats for just a couple of hundred quid (thanks eBay). It's been a brilliant car, economic and reliable - 2 words you don't hear very often with a Land Rover.

My normal car is now back and my Freelander - now surplus to requirements has been sold to my nephew (replacing his troublesome X5) as it was just too good to sell to a stranger.
I must admit I will miss it, as it was great fun to drive, much more nimble than my wifes Range Rover sport, but with my normal car back, I just won't use it.

I'll point my nephew in the direction of this forum as It's been very informative, but for now it's goodnight from me.

Most people come onto LZ moaning cos they've bought a Freelander and its got 'all these problems'. They moan and bitch about what rubbish cars they are, then never to be heard of again.

Should make this thread a stickey, showing how you can fix some bits that are wrong with them and go on to own a great and reliable motor!

Hope your nephew joins the forum.
And please tell me he took the X5 to a field, covered it in petrol and set fire to it. I hate those things more than a Ssanyong.

That's the problem with forums. Only the bad gets posted. Just think how many Freelanders are out there that remain problem free. Sadly those never get posted on here.

I did replace an injector and a wheel bearing, but it's an old car and you except it.
My niece and brother in law have Freelanders and apart from wear and tear, they ahave had no issues. One has done over 200k.

You only read about negative comments on forums, because when the car is running perfectly you tend to be out there enjoying it, rather than sitting on a computer moaning.

Most Freelanders out there have quite a few miles on them, most don't have a full main dealer history (where everything is checked) just an independent history (basic oil change type of service) and still keep on plodding along. And when they do go wrong they are relatively cheep to fix.

I would recommend one in a heartbeat.

Whist my Freelander is still going without fault with my Nephew, we have had a couple of things go wrong with the Range in the last month.
It does some wearied things with the electrics (parking sensors stay on if you start it on a hill etc) which are cured by turning it off and on again (is it windows based?) and the suspension has now started squeaking. My brother-in-law has a Vogue SE and he's always in the repair shop, whereas my niece has a pre-facelift Freelander 3 door and it's not caused any problems in 2 years.

So from my experience if you want a reliable Land Rover -ignore to what you read on the internet and get a Freelander.

I got tired of fixing my Discovery 3 and returned to a Freelander. The lack of space is more than compensated for the time saved not having to fix the thing. I miss the Discovery but don't miss the aggro it gave me. For now, I'm sticking with the Freelander.
