One of the issues with the TD5 I purchased with an absolute bodge of an oil cooler fitting, I assume at some point hte cooler failed and to say the previous owner cheaped out is unreal,

the original steel pipes have been cut about 10-15 inches away from the autobox just before where the pipes turn forward, and some standard hydraulic hose has been jubilee clipped over the end of the exposed steel pipe, run to the front to a cheap as chips ebay 6row cooler.

my question is this, in wanting to sort this issue out i am looking to have some proper flexi pipes made up by a friend of a friend who works for a hydraulic company (mates rates are good) either by flaring the ends of the existing stub of pipe and bolting them on or having the fittings going directly into the gearbox.

Obviously with an autobox cooling is good, so am looking at a nice 19 row mocal unit that i have seen on ebay but it comes with AN10 fittings as standard.

will AN10 be suitably large to allow enough flow through the cooler itself or should i try to find an AN12.

the hoses will be onto barbed appropriate fittings on the cooler itself.. but dont want to buy something too small which could cause problems,

also, just to confirm this, the lower hose is the return on the autobox right?

AN10=5/8"/16mm give or take a smudge.

AN12=3/4"/19mm'ish

From memory the steel pipes from box to cooler were about 5/8", rough translation AN10 will be fine.

You could get flexy pipes feed and return from the cooler with nice crimps and 90° bend on them to look the part.

that's what i was thinking..

the cooler i am looking at is second hand and comes with some nice AN10 90degree fittings, but with barbed ends for the hose so will go with that.. was just worried about flow and pressure etc.. the mocal cooler is more than mental enough for my offroad plans.

Or you could get a proper used but perfect TD5 oil cooler from Heathy (Paul) at Discovery 2 Parts on 01206 211623, and still use hydraulic hoses.
