Morning wise ones.

I've recently got my fist landy. Its a Defender 90 300TDi on an M plate. Its got the R380 gearbox (reverse down to the right). I was just having a detailed shifty underneath and spotted what looks like a missing drain plug:confused:. Can you guys help?

It is suposed to be open, it's for a wading plug you only fit one if you are going wading - there is one at the front of the engine too.

They are open to let any oil out so it does not contaminate the clutch/timing belt.

Gearbox or engine out to take off the clutch plate to swap the seal over. Might as well change the clutch whilst you are in there.

rear main oil seal ,they often leak a little ,a drop on the floor is ok ,but puddle needs attention

James honestly this past fortnight has is becoming increasingly alarming.

It's not what I would call gushing out rather a small weeping with an occasional drip which is marginally marking the floor, a little bigger than a 50pence piece.

Should I be experiencing any driving issues.? It appears to drive correct, the clutch is as it should be and the engine is strong with no smoke>

if your not noticing it on the dip stick or loss in clucth reservoir dont wory about it most leak some
 
I was more concerned as the bell housing looked like it had been well coated and I mean covered. I will endeavour to up a photo tomorrow.

Worst case scenario, I'm not too sure that I have the confidence to tackle this!!!!!

Is there anyone local (Newcastle) who would care to give me a hand with this for beer and more beer tokens as well as complementary pie and chips Alternatively I am happy to travel :)
 
Bell housing can be covered from lots of places. Vacuum pump for a start. Than there's the rocker gasket. Oil filter housing I'm sure there are more.

Best thing to do it pressure wash and keep a close eye on it to trace.

I did my crank shaft seal last year along with a gearbox rebuild(thanks James) new clutch and transfer box. Not a 5 min job and a engine crane is not essential by some but I would not attempt again with out one. I.e I removed with out and promptly invested in one to put back together!!!

What fun we have :D
 
So am I correct in thinking that I should continue using her until I reach the point where I am forced to top the oil up after every 3-5 days, or once my clutch goes and get them both done at the same time.?! I guess this is going to be around £450-£550.

Much rather attempt this myself, I think I need to grow some balls!!!
