Phew what a weekend, I have spent all weekend working on the patterns for the front wings only to end up where I started
I have this pattern coat primer which won't react with any resin, only problem is it is difficult to apply and get a good finish, consequently when flatting it I kept rubbing through so had to apply another coat. Then I leaned on one of the wings and heard a crack. On inspection I had cracked the filler so had to grind it out and redo it.
Then when I was hand flatting I could feel some ripples in the wing tops. I tried to ignore them but in the end I had to sort them out so out came the filler and both wing tops were refilled and blocked down.
I have just applied pattern coat primer on both wings so am back to where I was on Friday all be it with slightly straighter patterns.
Making your own composite panels from scratch is a serious undertaking, if I had known what I know now I would have made alloy panels but I am to far in now to turn back.

Oops.

Did a fair bit of pattern work when I made beach buggy shells - I feel your pain! ;)

hallelujah. the patterns are done at last. So now it is on to the moulds. I have ordered the materials and just need to book some time off.
To finish of this weekend I thought I would get back on familiar ground and do a spot of bracket making. so I have knocked up some front check straps and made the brackets for the rears which are the same as the fronts.

Coilovers and springs ?

No coil overs, though it does have adjustable spring seats. when I am a bit further on I will get it weighed and then get a set of springs made.
I have a set of bump stops that fit the mounting brackets you can just see but haven't fitted them as yet because I still need to check clearances without them. I have been thinking of fitting Disco 2 bump stops and air bumps but I think that will be a future upgrade.
ALRC regs state that bump stops must be fitted and match the chassis or axles used.

ALRC National rally this weekend at Stainby.

Aah ok those shocks just look threaded as for coilovers :)

Disco 2 bump stops are nice compared to the older style
Ps good to know I thought you could use any lr bump stop on modified class

They are threaded, I have the spring mounts in a draw. ALRC regs don't allow coil overs though I wish they did it would make my life easier, I wouldn't have needed to make spring seats and springs would be off the shelf.

Have you been in a comper using D2 bump stops, just wondered how they deal with the big hits as in do they rebound as bad.

C.5.4. Bump-stops must be fitted in the appropriate location and must be complete factory-specification items that match either the chassis or axles in use.

No but aslong as they take the abuse they look to be quite nice and not too solid the damped bump stops are awesome by all accounts but again I've never been in one

Every D2 we get in at work the rear bump stops have fallen off, though I am still considering them as with series 2 bumps you must lose 1 1/2 inch of travel.

I spoke to a few guys at the national that had air bumps fitted and they all rave about them so more expense, though that will be a mod after it is competing.

Nice to meet you at the weekend Jai

Just doing some pattern waxing, this is layer 6 of 12. I have to wait an hour between coats, then it will get 3 coats of polyvinyl alcohol. It may seem like overkill but it would be a disaster if the mould stuck to the pattern.

Hi Owl!!

Very nice to meet you too!! Nationals was a blast!!!

Bring on next year!

On the air bumps I thought they were banned or is that only for std class ??

Sorry I missed you Owl, Jai said you had met when we were up at the beer tent Sunday night. Maybe I was out on the RTV course.

Yesterday I layed up the mold for the rear cover, I will hopfully part it on thursday after it has cured.
Today I have been fitting flanges on one of the wings to make a split mold. I am making it in 3 parts so I can have decent return flanges on the inside of the wing to fix the inner wing and the wheel arch spats.
