OK. 1997 P38 4.6 HSE. I replaced bulbs on HEVAC and dash. To do so, I disconnected the battery. (First I simply disconnected it, but when the alarm sounded, I read the manual and did it the right way - ignition on&off, disconnect within 17 seconds)
All went well; when I locked up, it even reminded me that the bonnet was not fully-closed; a "mislock"-sorted that.
But
Now when I lock the car, the alarm bleeps once. It didn't do this before. Nothing on the dash to indicate a mislock.
Should the alarm bleep to confirm locking, or is something amiss?

Could be a setting in the BeCM has changed when replugging in the battery - it happens....

Also, as you already know it can signal a mislock due to an open aperture!

Interesting that it told me about bonnet open mislock, but nothing displayed now. Also, "sunroof not set" still displaying despite all my efforts...hmmm

Strange mines a 97 hse 4.6 and I've just disconnected the battery for years reconnected and it's bin fine. Reset all the bilge...fine. sunroof has to go the full Monty. Slide back forward then vent then closed finger on button...set. look for the slide stopping it going right back.

I think that as long as something is not "Set" the BeCM cannot be sure that your car is fully "closed" so will sound the warning.
Set the sunroof and all windows as per message centre alerts and then see what happens.

It might be the sunroof that's doing it...

To 'Set' the sunroof, roll it all the way back, hold for 2 seconds. Roll it all the way forward until it stops, and hold for 2 seconds. Release button and press again to move the sunroof to vent, and hold 2 seconds... .should then get 'SUNROOF SET'

If that doesn't work, then it could be worth checking the sunroof motor, as there are a couple of microswitches in there that trigger to tell the BECM the motor is moving, so it can count the position. If one of those is faulty or intermittent, then it can also cause the sunroof to not set properly.

Thanks folks. You were all correct-once I'd properly Set the sunroof and got the confirmation, it's stopped bleeping at me when I lock.
PS I just replaced the switch telltales (green ones on the centre compnsole switches for fogs, hazards etc.) with these - 5 cost me less than £4 and they arrived next day.
PPS should there be any particular indication that I've engaged Superlocking (lock twice quickly)? On my Jaguar XF, the alarm cheeps to confirm Superlocking when the locks clunk in. On the P38, the locks clunk, but nothing else happens...

On superlock the lights will flash 3 times rather than the 1... I think that's the right count??

I don't think there is a Superlocking confirmation, only a "Mislock" alert.
I have mine set to be a double "chirrup" of the BBUS.

Never superlock a p38 you are asking for trouble, if the battery goes down you will have a he'll of a job getting the doors open if it buggers up we are talking cutting latch plates and agro, who is going to nick one we have enough trouble with them when you have a set of keys.

Er, what's a BBUS and how did you set that? (Neophyte asking)
The BBUS is the Battery Backed-Up Sounder for the alarm system.
With the correct diagnostic tools you can set "Mislock" notification to be flashing side-repeater lights , console light flash or a Sounder.
I set mine to the BBUS and it gives a very loud "Cheep-Cheep" on mislock. Which you cannot fail to hear; whereas a light flashing in bright sunlight (I think) can be missed.

From memory 3 flashes of the indicators (if set as the arm/disarm notification) is superlock. Also, the doors will lock once, and then about 30s later will clunk again as superlock is activated. Even if the superlock wires to the door latches have been cut, they should still clunk again, as superlocking uses a combination of the CDL motor and the superlock motor to move the appropriate mechanisms in the latch.

You may like to check if the door striker plates are adjusted correctly and are not too tight only allowing half cam on the latches. You will get this if the door lock latching mechanism does not go to full cam.
