On the heater readout an icon shaped like a book has appeared.

When I checked the owners manual it states that the Air Con self diagnoses and if there is a problem this icon appears.

Anyone any idea what the problem could be?

Don't want to give Landie my hard earned pennies for them to tell me something that could be easily fixed.

I'm sure you'll have a lot of responses from forum members later on, but try doing a search on here and RangeRovers.net re aircon open book symbol - lots of info about.
Usually, if the open book comes on immediately, its a blend motor problem. Other problems could include a faulty HEVAC (front control unit in the car) or even low / no gas in the system. You need an independent with a Rovacom or Faultmate / Testbook software to check the car and see what the fault is really. Where are you based so people can point you to a good indy?
 
Best thing to do first is check all aspects of the air con/heating and see what isn't working. Blend Motors most likely. If it is Blend Motor, look at that Range Rover site Rangiegal told you about, Blend Motor Diagnosis and Replacement it tells you how to check to see which blend motor it is.

Then the fun starts!
 
Rangerovers.net says that the book symbol can appear if there is low or no gas in the system, but I must say I also haven't had it happen when mine needs regassing, another one of the variable foibles of this wonderful car I guess!!! Some models apparently do. others, including ours, don't.
 
Mine's a 98 4.6. Book symbol definitely appears when no gas. Also, in a previous life, had a 96 diesel and that was the same. maybe 99 on don't? Either that or the pressure switches stick. One way to check is to put the temp to max cold and see if the aircon compressor cuts in. If it doesn't, probably no gas. Which usually means a leak. Which usually means the condenser. There was a previous thread that mentioned a common place for leaks was in the top right hand corner I think which could be patched up. If you go to an aircon place (many ordinary garages now have the equipment), it'll probably cost you around £35 for a pressure check or £45 for a regass if no leak.
 
You could be right with the 99 onwards - mine is a 99 - but I know that I have read that the open book can appear with low gas and you've just confirmed that. There are a few differences from 99 onwards post BMW days I think. Just enough to confuse us!!!

not so, if youre paranoid scitzo(bi polar or whatever ****ty lable it has these days)

you can panic like fcuk then blame it on them, the ones that are out to get ya!

apart from that, i have a very calm attitude in a crisis, theory is if i cant fix it at the road side get recovery out and they will sort my trip home!:doh::doh::doh:
 
he's got top side of it now tho! he seems pleased with it and i reckon all the hard work just endears the car more!
 
I tiptoe round mine talking soothingly to it in the hope it chugs on happily without huge expense and thank heavens it can't read forums to find out about Wrxfifers woes!!!! Let's hope he has a good run now! Made a very long trip to Holyhead (Anglesey) and back to the East Mids this Saturday and the V8 burbled away happily for over 6 hours in all, I'm pleased to say.

Nothing like the sound of that burble.......:):):):D:D
 
mine was exceptional during my trip to wales except the lpg system going west but you cant blame the car as the gas shouldnt be there technically!

I live in Lytham St Annes - North West England - any one know any reputable garage who has experience in this and could fix my issues?

Lots of guys here have done this themselves although its a bit time consuming. Whatever you do, don't go NEAR a main stealer to do it as they will charge the earth and still bodge it probably. If you don't want to attempt it yourself, there is a good Landy Mobile Mechanic who travels to you, who will do blend motorsl. / O rings etc at a good price -he is LR trained and very reliable. Phone Jason on 07903077948 for a quote or further info as to what work he can do. He looks after my RR repairs at present, so I can recommend him.
 
I have the book symbol come up every now and again, but operations don't seem to be affected so I don't do anything about it. Perhaps it does need a re-gas after 11 years on the road.

I use Crook Brothers in Houghton (although I haven't used him for heater 'O' rings) - the other side of Preston to you. The guy there is Graham. Very good. Very honest. Maybe worth a call.
