Hi All

My AC compressor cuts in and out constantly without cooling the car fully. The fans run OK and the gas has been weighed to ensure thats right.
No check book on the hevac.
Any Ideas?

Thanks

Steve

Cheers. Have taken the shim out as per rangerovers.net. Still the same. Wammers, Not sure where/what is the expansion valve is.

The expansion valve is mounted on the condensor through the bulkhead. When the gas is compressed it heats up, when it is released under a pre-determined pressure through the expansion valve into a larger volume it cools in the condensor. The expansion valve releases compressed gas into the condensor giving the cooling. If it is partially blocked or stuck shut, the pressure built in the compressor has knowhere to go so the over pressure switches cuts the compressor off. As pressure is lost through the partially blocked expansion valve into the condensor it will start the compressor again. There won't be much cooling action as this happens. It sounds to me as if that maybe your problem.

Update. I bypassed the compressor thermal cut out which made no difference. Is there any merit in changing the twin wire pressure switch?

That is because the gas is not getting to hot it is getting to much pressure if the expansion valve is not working correctly. The single pressure switch only turns on the fans, the dual pressure switch will not allow compressor to run if gas pressure is to low and switches compressor off if it gets to high. It also controls the fans in parallel or series to adjust their speed.

Fans are all or nothing. One of the metal pipes to the compressors gets red hot. Then the compressor kicks in for around 5 secs the other pipe becomes freezing cold. The air con pipes are a uniform temp all along.

Then you may have a fault on the dual pressure switch located on the drier. Best thing though is take it to a aircon man and see if anything is going through expansion valve. They can become blocked or sticky. What you really need is to have the faults codes read to see if anything is stored. The fans should come on in two stages slow or fast dependent on temp. If yours is a petrol model they should come on in slow mode when compressor is engaged to assist engine cooling dependent on engine temp. I think they also come on if engine temp gets to hot even with aircon off. The cooling on the V8 is marginal, that is why this feature is included. The diesel does not have this.

Cheers wammers. I've changed that switch on my old dse. You don't lose the gas when you do. The ac guy that had the gauges on it last week didn't report any blockages. He just felt the constant cycling on/off was wrong but he wasn't genned up on the rr system

The most common cause of AC compressor short cycling is a lack of refrigerant.

I know you said it was weighed, but a second opinion would be my first stop.
Kwik Fit are still doing the offer of a aircon check.
If they don't improve the cooling, they don't charge.

Recharge or No Charge

Let Kwik Fit recharge your Air Con while-u-wait. We will replace and recharge lubricant and refrigerant levels in line with your manufacturerÂ’s recommendation. If we cannot improve the coolest vent temperature from your car by more than 10% when measured in degrees Celsius - then you pay nothing at all.
