Afternoon all,

The defender 110 is looking a little sorry for itself. Doors are bubbling, and rust patches starting along the rear capping. I'm in Dumfries and Galloway close to Canonbie and was looking for someone who has tackled a respray for a bit of advice. I want to prep it myself to save a bit of cash and have a compressor and a spray gun that came with it. If there's anyone local who I can lean on for a bit of advice please give me a shout.

Cheers
Sean

I manage a paint shop and I would advise you against prepping your vehicle and then expecting someone else to then spray it on your behalf.
Save the extra pennies and get the job done properly. I don't want to dwell too much on this but potentially you are opening up a can of worms. If the paint job doesn't turn out like you'd imagined and you prepped it then you have no comebacks. When it comes to painting it's all in the prep.

Cheers stingrey, i was thinking of prepping and having a go at spraying myself, I know it wouldn't be a top notch job but may be all I can muster just now!

Just remember that a good paint job is all in the prep. Don't bother with metallics and always maintain your wet edge.
Painting is a fine art; plenty can paint but not many can paint well. If I was you I'd buy a cheap panel from your local scrappy and practice prepping and painting on that before going all out on your candy and making a cats arse out of it.

Good advice! Il do just that. If I'm struggling with the basics I'm Maby pm you for a bit more advice if that's ok?

Oh dear, bubbling and rust and now a bump aswell?

Stingrey was spot on. I can paint, not brilliant but I can get it on there and get a reasonable finish. When I started my apprenticeship the first thing I was told was 'good prep can make a bad painter look good, but a good painter can never make bad prep look good'. Followed by the compulsory 6 months of wet flatting and making tea.

It's also hard enough finding somewhere reputable to do a respray, never mind do one on top of somebody else's prep. Most places just want to do insurance work or extreme stuff. If you really intend to do all the dirty, dusty, boring prep work you may as well put the paint on too. Remember also that some paints are extremely dangerous. Another major consideration is has it been painted before? If it has - what with? Because if you squirt a load of celly primer over the top of 6 coats of BandQ emulsion you are going to be mopping your paint up off the drive. Ask yourself - what finish do you want from it? And how much are you prepared to spend on it?

There are one or two build / resto threads on here which mention / detail painting with a roller, last one I remember was by guy called Cornish Rattler - painted a 90 - looked damn good too ( apart from the colour:p ....... sorry! )

Agree with everyone above - the six P's rule:- Proper Prep Prevents P*ss Poor Performance

EDIT:- Well, after a search, I found the thread mentioned above

Paint was never a problem whilst Cellulose was available... I sprayed many cars and got a very good result
Now its no longer sold, theres...
2 pack which requires an air Fed mask
Water based which requires dryers
Or
Acrylic which isn't very hard wearing BUT...
top coat with a tough lacquer and you get a...
Tough professional finish without harming your neighbours pets etc
Worth a mention?:eek::D

Cheers everyone, apreciate the advice. Would I be able to do anything about the corrosion on the doors so it wouldn't return? Has anyone re-skined there's?
