Hi all, not long had my newest purchase, a lovely P plate 300tdi ES. I love it to bits, its great.

I have already fitted an EGR blanking kit and a decat pipe which has improved things a little, however currently she has Pirelli Scorpion AT's on, and I fancy something a little chunkier. Nothing outragious as she is my daily driver and SWMBO likes the Disco as is.

I do gentle laning, shooting so muddy field/track driving.

Would a 2" lift kit be worth it, and what size tyres would suit

What tyres can I get away with at the mo, standard to give her a little lift? Im thinking of BFG AT's? Any good?

Any pics/advice would be great.

bfg at very good all round

larges tyres to fit with no mods to be done are 245 70 16 and a couple more cant remenmber them all i have these on my disco 1 but 200tdi...

i havent got a lift and i do green lannin, when i get the time.. so i dnt need it but depends on wat you want and what you are usin it for

If you are doing 'light green laning' then I would say you don't need a lift - but what is light?

Re tyres, BFG very good but so are General AT2's and they are about 15% cheaper - buy from Camskill Tyres.

Std size for a TDi 300 is 235/70/16, 'H' speed rated and I would keep to that, just in case you need to claim on insurance. You don't want to give them any opportunity to not pay.

:5biagree: you could also invest in some recovery points for the front and rear, a decent recovery rope and some rated shackles. Have a search, all the required info is on here;)
 
BFG or General AT2 are fine for light off roading and also very good on road. I don't see the need for suspension lift - the discovery is very capable without modification. You may consider a steering guard and diff guards a useful investment
 
I have a D2 TD5 that we've just bought and is a little 'too nice' to take off road at the mo, but when we eventually do I think we will only be looking a diff guards, steering guard, maybe a tank guard, rock/tree sliders and some more agressive tyres as I'm on road tyres at the mo... I used an old exmod S3 109 a few years ago and only put diff guards on that and had a lot of fun.. i think the more you put on it the further you will go before you hit trouble.... Sometimes it's better to back off and turn around than continue...
 
hi i have d1 300tdi and it is used for general run about and lite laning i have 2" suspension lift + dislocation cones and antiroll bars removed as i found when you get some cross axle parts on the track you loose traction especualy when going up hill (the missus and kids were not impresed lol) i also have kumo kl71 m/t's i find they are a great tyre not much road noise and fantastic off road only thing with them is you have to do the camel cut.
you will definalty need diff and stearing guards and as dewin says some recovery gear that is esential
 
I am after nothing serious, just enough to cope with muddy tracks and fields. The mix that is on there at the moment are two Pirelli Scorpion's and two Goodyear GT4's or something.

As for more serious stuff/RTV's I have a '69 SWB 2a which is great, so I have recovery ropes etc that I carry around with me.

Would you suggest just a set of BFG AT's?? That should suffice with what will be thrown at her, I just like to be prepared :)

To be honest Jonathan I would be recommending General AT2 tyres - thet are as good as BFG for your purposes and are noticebably cheaper.
 
Cheers Big Lad, I had thought about them. Years ago I had a Jeep Cherokee 4ltr on gas. I fitted Grabber AT2's on that, due them having a slightly softer compound so mre grip for the power. I took it to a P&P and they performed well, I didnt get stuck, mind you I wasnt exactly in extra heavy stuff

Well ive been pricing tyres today. BFG AT's are coming in at £111 ish from Black circles, and the GG AT2's around the £84.60 from Camskill place.

Other thoughts have been Cooper Discoverer ST's?

Any further thoughts folks?

I've had Grabber AT2's on for a while now, I've not got stuck in mud, snow, sand or wet grass (standard suspension & tyre size). They'll be more than adequate for what you require of them.
 
Well guys, after much deliberation I decided on the GG AT2's. Phoned most local tyre emporiums but no one could get hold of any, so...

In the end I got 4 BFG AT's normal size for my ES 235/70/16's, fitted for £480 which isnt bad.

Havent been anywhere yet but there is a shoot on tomorrow morning so will let you know.

They looks the nuts though :)
