Hi
Can we create a thread which will make a Landyzone analyses of home brewed go faster supplements, you have added to your Defender which do actually make it go faster.
The theme for this thread was created in our local laboratory (the PUB) for anyone not used to the term PUB ours is an alcoholic drinking hostelry which closes at 23:00 hours and this was at 22:30 and six hours of drinking alcohol prior to the creation of this thread.
What started this thought process was my wife rides an MV Agusta F4 motorcycle which is apparently quite fast (I don’t do bikes) but she is adamant that if she uses ear plugs she is able to travel faster on her bike than without ear plugs.
This got us thinking of other go faster add-ons we have all used which were not sold as performance enhancement devices.
To get the ball rolling:- It was unanimous around the table that a radio turned on and tuned into your favourite music channel will aid performance, but if you add a CD player loaded with heavy rock than this will further enhance your performance by as much as 10%. This may me more if you drive high performance cars such as Skoda Rapid or better which none of us have.
What will not count is Go faster stripes because we heard accounts of as much as a 30% increase in performance accountable to Go faster stripes we believe this not to be true as the general consensus was at max it could only be 5% increase as the added weight of the paint will reduce the effect of the stripe.
What do you use which has enhanced the performance of your Land Rover Defender?

Does a quad cam v8 come under music, , performce or both?

A QUAD CAM V8?
THAT comes under music.
You could only have fitted that for the sound it will make, the added performance is a by-product of fitting it.
I have this image of driving (and it can be anywhere in the world) a Defender fitted with the above and listening to the orchestra under the bonnet (hood) and who cares how fast you are going.
That would be therapy for the deceased.

Like your wife Tim, if I want to go fast I'll ride my bike. You will never make a Defender move like an F4!

Sorry I don't do bikes I leave that to Ann they scare the shi* out of me. We were trying to get the Defender drivers view of performance enhancement. She can keep her F4 in one gear and blow me away without any problem but not on a snowy winters day on the Brecon beacons, I have the upper hand where performance is concerned.

when it's revving at nearly 3 times what my TD5 does it goes past the music stage and becomes torturous on the ears. I don't care what you say, Land rovers shouldn't scream at you. It's like running fingers down a chalk board to me.:D

Ratty
So something like the Newcomen engine in your Defender would do it for you?
Single cylinder low revving volumes of torque

The Newcomen engine was the first mechanical device not powered by animal or human power (sorry if you know this).

I actually quite like the noise of the td5 at full chatter. It has a very unique sound to it.

Having chipped my td5 yesterday and then tweaking the turbo over several stages on the way home id say that I wouldn't of thought a fully laden td5 110 could get up through cheddar gorge that fast.:crazy::D

I am with you on that one I also have a TD5 it is chipped and the usual extras that go with it (EGR removal, larger intercooler, de-CAT) I have also removed the centre box and it sounds fantastic, goes like stink and like yours is a pleasure to drive but will it go faster through Cheddar Gorge
if you are wearing camo clothes or a black dinner suit, radio on or off, ear plugs in or out?

tim you #### cheddar gorge without teling me and stopping in the sweet shop for blackcurrant and liquorice twists, it costs me 20 quid derv and the bridge to get my favourite sweets, then all you want to do is listen to the exshaust note thro the gorge

In order to go faster the stereo volume must be down low. The drivers window must be down approx 3" and one must have the magic cigarette smouldering in ones hand. :D

Ok "thought it was mine" can you say your Defender will go faster after having got your favourite sweets or before?
Sorry I did not tell you about cheddar Gorge but this is going were no Defender has gone before. We did not discuss performance enhancing sweets. Is it the Liquorice or the Blackcurrant that makes the difference? To save the £20:00 can you purchase on-line?

Ratty, Now we are cooking, low cut stereo volume, 3" of window gap and a smouldering magic cigarette. Can you give an accurate added performance figure for these settings you use?

I reckon it all adds up to around 15-20bhp gain.

If the chippy is about to close there is also the extra 10 horses that can be gained by literally standing on the loud pedal. In order to avoid a RSI this additional pedal travel should only be used in short bursts when it is absolutely necessary.

So closing times and hunger can have a positive effect on performance of a Defender.
Just like Nitrous Oxide short bursts for max gain.
Could we say when the traffic lights are about to change to red, you change down and use the loud pedal to the max. Is a absolute necessity or just fun to see if the car behind has to stop and you do not.
Or is it a fact that the extra 15-20 BHP will get you up over the rocks when off roading?

I don't know if it works in a defender, but a backwards base ball cap works in a corsa.

The Q

Is a backwards base ball cap a ball base cap?

I have seen this mod on a Corsa and yes it does work . I am not 100% sure of the % increase but it looks impressive.
I have just been reminded of the other Corsa mod that is the horizontal drivers seat and the driver so laid back that he is unable to see out of the windscreen or fit a seat belt. That must have tremendous torque boost because the vehicle travels slow and the drivers head nods for and aft repeatedly.
