OK you are all going to think I'm a total numpty but this is a serious question.

Took my daughter car shopping in my newly aquired Tdi Defender. On the way over the moor the accelerator pedal stuck down. I just pulled it back up again with my foot and continued carefully. Yes I know I should have investigated but I was only half a mile from the garage we were going to. It happened again pulling in so the mechanic had a look.

Apparently it was the mat causing it. He said I must be pushing it forward with my feet.

These are genuine original defender mats. I am now being careful and pulling it back with my foot regularly.

I usually drive in Muckers, Dubarries or similar boots. But surely Defenders were designed to drive in similar footwear. Is it something I am doing or is it a common fault.

Any ideas on how to stop it happening again. Its not very safe. Should I just get rid of these mats, I dont think my last land rover had them, but then again it was a wreck.

I also had this problem. I just cut a square out the top of the mat so the pedal can slide past with ease. Haven't had any problems since.

I had this happen too. A bit disconcerting going down the motorway with the engine going mad and the temperature guage going up even faster.

Un stuck the cable and it was OK for a couple of days, then it happened again.

In my case it was the cable itself, it was sticking when the pedal was depressed. Just needed a lot of lube to become normal again.

Thanks for the replies, feeling less stupid now :D

Off to find a Stanley knife, thank you :D

Will get it checked when I have it serviced, thank you.

I had this problem a while back along a busy road which was fun. It turned out to be a small piece of plastic on the accelerator cable getting stuck in the grommet where it passes through the bulkhead. Just have a look for that, I think it's about a cm long and clear.
