So, while having the rear brakes done, I was having a nosey round the front and I've noticed that one of the teeth in the NSF is worn which probably accounts for the pedal clicking I have. The boot on that CV is also split.

Is the ABS ring part of the CV or are they separate? Just thinking for when I get round to fixing them :)

CV (Constant velocity joint) Casing (The outer shell) Sweated (Interference fit part, heated up to expand it then put over the casing and allowed to cool so it shrinks and grips the outer shell.) :D:D:D

After my post re. checking a steamed plug and your sweated post I really think we should come up with a pedantic old fart's book explaining the often forgotten long lost mysteries of car repair. ;):D:D

Apologies for the thread necrosis.

I'm going to be changing the wheel bearings in both fronts shortly and, while I'm at it, I'll get the long overdue cv gator replaced. Seeing as the whole kit from Island is £20 I'll just get that as it'll sort the abs problem too.

Is there anything else I should replace as par for the course doing these jobs? I know the requirements for a huge press to sort the bearings and that's already covered.

Just wanna know if there's anything else I should add to my cart with island.

The CV kit is Britpart - acceptable for this? What about the bearings? - they have britpart at almost half the price of the 'Timken' 'kits'. Would they be sufficient or should I stick with the more expensive part?

I've used the Britpart CV boot kits with no issues (so far). They're not as nice as the Land Rover ones (you'll see when you get it off, particularly the clip) but seem to do the job.

I'd advise against the Britpart oil seal for the half-shaft though. The Land Rover one used to be £12 but I couldn't see one at Island last time I looked. Maybe no-one was buying them.
 
So, CV kit is fine... I should avoid britpart oil seals, but what about using the britpart bearings?

I would not touch anything like this from the far east any more, but I guess if you don't use the car much it is not so important .....

Surely the oil seals are there? .... I changed mine not so long ago ...... GENUINE ones only (sorry to be so repetitive!).
 
Never done the bearings. Sorry. I'd go with Spiggy though. Bearing aren't that expensive and the spec from the east just isn't worth thinking about. Bugger of a job as it is so not worth skimping on.

Certainly you can get good quality alternator bearings .... at least that's what the seller says!

Places in the east are quite capable of making good bearings. Problem is that known name makers get them made there because it is cheaper. It's not the ones made in officially licensed factories to the correct specs that are the problem. It's the ones made in the factory across the road out of cheese and put in genuine boxes that cause the trouble.
