 hi lads quick question , i have a 2ooo v8 4.6 vogue with thor engine , the A.B.S. light comes when i start from cold 1st thing in morning , i know that is normal BUT this stays on for 5/6/ minutes ? is this right ? cos i thought it should go off a lot quicker , i appreciate it has to fill the the air tank ? but would appreciate it for a bit more info or suggestions ,, if datatek or wammers are about or any other imput cheers lads ??????????

It hasn't got to fill any air tank..!! thats the EAS...

The ABS uses a hydraulic accumulator to store hydraulic pressure for use in the brake system, this pressure is derived from a small electrically driven hydraulic pump.

The ABS bulb should stay on until the ABS sensors in the wheel hubs detect movement and the system can do a self check to ensure those sensors are picking up the movement of the exciter ring in the hub.

If you don't move the vehicle faster than 5-7mph the light won't go off as it hasn't yet completed its self check.

If the light is staying on and you are already on the move above 5-7mph for longer than 3-5 seconds, then I would first check the ABS sensors are seated correctly in their holes (just push them all the way home, the air gap will set itself when the wheels start to rotate).

If they seem firmly home with no obvious damge to wiring, it is time to get it onto a diagnostic device (Faultmate, FCR, Nanocom, Testbook, Autologic et al) to see if the ABS system is throwing up any codes.

sounds all good to me sainty ,im a bit more happy now thanks for your advice will keep you posted cheers mozz

It's probably the accumulator, mine has just started doing this since the very cold weather. What is happening is that it is taking the pump some time to re-pressurize the system. If I let is tick over for a couple of minutes before moving off the light goes out as normal and continues to do so for the rest of the day although the pump can be heard coming on more often than usual. Shall be ordering a new accumulator.

Maybe in your case accumulator is gettig tired. But under normal circumstances. You will get ABS, handbrake light and TC on when you put ignition to position 2. ABS light should come on for a second or so then go out and come on again. It should not go out again until the vehicle has reached 5 mph. If you switch on, handbrake off in park, hand brake lamp and TC lamp will stay on until accumulator is pressured, up to 40 seconds to do this. Then both should go out leaving ABS lamp on until you move off. Anymore than 40 seconds suspect accumulator is on it's way home.

That describes the normal process exactly, it's just that it now takes longer than 40 seconds to re-pressurise the system. Of course it could be the pump but I'm hoping not as it works fine after the first start of the day.

I would say accumulator Keith. Mine is getting like that used to be a few seconds now it's getting longer. When bladder in accumulator is good pump is pumping against bladder pressure so it gets there quicker. When bladder is weak the pump has almost to fill the sphere to get up to pressure so it takes longer.

That's what I figured, might stick the one from the spares dog on it before I shell out for a new one although that could be just as bad as it's probably older.:(

Seems like bladders and age are an issue with P38's as well, at least it doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night.........................

Up in themiddle of the night! Chance would be a fine thing, my P38 is much better at sinking down over night than even staying at the level I left it at:rolly:

Have you tried incontenance pads? They are supposed to stop leaks.:D:D

:jaw: spud? you cant stay up at night? i thought that only happened when you reached 60yrs of age...................

thanks wammy and keith ,,, 1st where is the asccumalator is it the big blck round unit on left hand side ????????? if so can they be refurbed or will a seconhand one do ? also love the banter about the leakages i.e. bladder im on water tablets and when they say youv'e got to **** then youv'e got to **** and its always somwhere were theres no fkin toilets cos i go out and forget iv;e took the tablets so now i think the dementias kikin in but i am 61 ,,nevermind ay ,,,cheers lads keep the patter goin think its great and many thanks for the help cheers MOZZ:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Hi Mozz.
Pump is located down from the fuse box and the round black lump on top of it is the accumulator :)

Pressed submit too soon.
No they can't be refurbished as far as I know and a second hand unit could be as bad or worse. Also if it has been left open to the elements **** would get in which will be transfered to your braking system. Not worth it in my humble opinion mate.

Can't refurb accumulator Mozzy. It has a rubber bladder in it filled with Nitrogen to about 180 bars. Brake fluid is pumped into it to give you pressure for the braking system. It has nowt to do with your ABS lamp not going out, that is down to ABS ECU not picking up signals from sensors. You may have a wheel bearing on it's way out that has knocked a sensor back. Or a bad connection on a plug.
