Hi all,
Just needing a bit of help with my ABS, as this morning when I went out, the ABS light stayed on. Then on the way home, it went out, then stopped, engine off etc, and set off again and light on.
So when I got home bridged the 4th and 15th pin for any errors, and the code 1-2 came up. Checked my list that one ain’t on! So took off each wheel anyways and checked the sensors, and all seems ok,
Then when checking back inside I heard some relay’s clicking when you switch on the ignition. Further investigation found that the green ABS relay is clicking with a Black relay – not sure what this relay is for, and it has larger than normal spade connectors....pics below showing them both.

They only click about 3-4 times and then nothing more, but the ABS light stays on.....
Any clues anyone?
Cheers

Larger than usual spades usually means higher current rated relay, like 60a plus....where was this relay ? It doesnt look like any of the usual ones that I have seen on the two layer rack, they are normally yellow and green. You havent got the fan relay from out of its rubber boot have you ? But then, why would it be clicking ?

the relay was just one of them in with the abs relay, and it wasn't in any rubber boot etc...just there....

Was it on the rack, clipped to the metal strip ? Cos that,by the wiring,is shifting some major current......and I dont recognise it from my ABS motors. But thats not saying much cos,a) it may be suffering from previous owner fiddling, b) could be different on different vehicles (the friday afternoon syndrome) and last but most importantly, c) I am thick and have no memory

ok, so I have the ABS relay and the pump relay both clicking at ingnition on. So is that my pump that is knackered, or the relays?

Is there any way to check the pump?

When you say "clicking" do you mean, like, once ? Which would be them connecting the supply....or chattering, which would be them not connecting the supply

They click about 3 or 4 times, and I have also noticed the abs light does seem to darken for a second (not go out light it should when it does its check, but like it there is a cross wire or a short that makes it dim for a sec), when they are clicking if that's relevant? Brakes ain't my forte unfortunately

Right, now I know what the black relay is for, I have done some more searching about, and came across this reply..

I found the abs pump relay to be corroded (the coil inside was open circuit). abs pump relay is under the glove box (RHD) car and has BIG(unusual) terminals on it, also has brown/red wire, white orange wire, brown/orange wire, and black wire. also check and clean the contacts at the ABS Block, there is a mulitpin connector on the pump block and a two wire connector not far from the pump motor.

So I am now going to clean up all the connections to see if that works, but where is best to get a new Pump Relay from, just in case, is this going to be 'stealers' only part?

Shouldnt think so,google the serial number or otherwise get the amp rating (it will be 60 plus I reckon) and get a generic one to match from vehicle wiring or any auto electrical. From the diagram on the side of the unit in the pic it is a standard type.

thanks for that - I have been searching for the actual name, and not coming up with anything

Have done a search for both the ABS relay and the Pump relay, and think I am now sorted for the pump relay (thanks to the above post ;)), but for the abs relays my search came up with this...

Land Rover Heated Rear Window etc Relay (YWB10032) | eBay UK

I am guessing this one will be ok, and that it has many uses in different models, but thought I would double check.....

As far as I know....(note that !)...the yellow ones are all the same and the green ones are all the same, just not as each other,if you understand.

Personally, whenever I am in the scrapyard I grab all the relays out of the disco for spares, whatever it is I am there for. I pay for them too ! They never ask for much...a fiver for a handful sort of thing. And thats from a big, posh insurance yard where everything is listed by stock number ! Is there not a yard near you that you could blag a few from ? In case there is another problem that is causing the relays to go,leaving you needing more ?

Oh,and search the makers name and the numbers, not the description...as different people have different names for the parts...good luck mate, hope it all works and let us know...it all goes in the knowledge bank !

Other than that, match up the terminal numbers and the diagram on the side of the relay with generic ones - they usually are of set patterns and so easy to replace with non-LR parts

Many thanks for all the info....much appreciated.

Will have a pop out to local motorfactors to see what I can get - don't know of a scrappy near, unfortuantely....

Then will clean up all the terminals, change the relays and see what happens...

As thought it strange that I cannot clear the fault memory, and the fault I do get is 1-2 which is not listed on any of the lists I have found.....

Does anyone know the amp of the Green relay for the ABS, as looking to get one of these from the motorfactors too?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Well, I have now replaced the relays with new ones....and guess what, still clicking on start up.

Still the same code of 1-2 that I cannot clear.

Checked all the connectors in the bonnet, all seemed fine.

Turned on the ignition, and no clicking, drove and light went out - YES!

Switched everything off, then back on again just to be sure - and the clicking is back

Have taken a pic of my ABS unit, as if I unplug the plug marked in a blue circle, the clicking doesn't go away on the first start up, but if if unplug the plug in the red circle, then on first start up no clicking etc, but back again on second start up....

The red plug powers the black motor (?) marked in yellow circle...so guessing this is where my problem is coming from, maybe ????

So if it is this, can I just change this part , or is it a case of stripping out the whole unit, and having to bleed brakes etc, as that I can't do :(

Cant help you on that one mate but bleeding the brakes on an ABS is no different to normal....james martin is usually the man with the answers but is very busy....try a PM to him....good luck

as to the amperage, I seem to remember its 30a at the very most.If you are not sure and you can get a 40a of the same configuration, that might give a bit of peace of mind

Brakes I tend to leave to the 'experts' as I dont have any experience doing them, so no confidence at all - might have to take it in to a specialist for a look at then :(
