IF I was a trained mechanic I would defo go for it. I'm not and have never claimed to be unlike alot of people on Landy Forums giving out blatently bad advice. Somtimes I think I shoulda been so I could really **** on the wanna be's dishing out bad advice to noobies. But I may know somone who quite possibly may be interested not a million miles away just for the hell of doing somthing different. I have phoned/pm'd details to whom it involves. I think I'd go for the crack if I had half a chance myself but again not a trained mechanic although I'm confident I could do the work better than some "mechanics" with the correct manuals/backup.

If ya got kids and family and a mortgage/rent its gonna matter:doh::doh::doh: Thats probably why he aint got much response.....I couldnt live on a grand a month and you'd probably find that for a lot of people

I reckon a agrand a month would be fine for a single person without a family back home to support.

After all they are getting accommodation paid for... and think of the experience! Jeez... can they put this opportunity on hold for a few years until Kai is old enough!

I am going to have to jump in and say a few words after Jai has tried to sell this to me.

OK the experience will be great.

The off roading will be some of the best in the world.

All great so far.

The wages of £1000.00 per month sounds possible until you find out you WILL have to pay tax on that upon your return to this country. To achieve non resident status you must only be in this country a maximum of 90 days in a tax year. Starting april to april. Yes you can bring back the cash but you cant pay your mortgage with money you cant let an accountant see!

You WILL need to be very good. You are putting the lives of the drivers of these vehicles into the hands of a man YOU train! Not only will you need to be a very good mechanic, but you must understand "bush" mechanics as well and be able to teach it to a guy who wont understand technical terms.

I have done this before and I can tell you the following.

The UN tries to do this on the cheap and fails miserably on every count. Getting third rate trainers resulting in forth rate mechanics. All UN agency vehicles ended up being serviced by an internationally run garage service at very unreasonable rates. Not doing it this way results in vehicles breaking down in very unpleasent areas. They never break down outside your garage door!

The last time I did this the position paid nearlly 50 thou a year with paid vacation and flights, bank accounts and the promise of removal from the country in the event of an emergency and the power and authority to back it up.

Yet I am still tempted just for the buzz.

If september is a bust and the position is still open I might be tempted.

If you ended up there It would be an interesting drive home all the unsettled countries you would possibly need to go through would be er interesting to get back to civilization.

We are now looking at offering a three month job at £1000 per month, they will be carrying out work on vehicles themselves but more importantly offering training to Derek our Malawian mechanic, he's good at his job, but would benefit from expert input from a real Land Rover expert. I am wondering if you know of anyone who may like to take the opportunity?
