I decided that today was the day to tackle the issue of the stone chips in the windscreen.
Cut the old screen out no problem, cleaned up the screen panel which was in good condition. Already fitted the new screen rubber so pop the screen in, ten minutes and it will be done!
Started one side, went to do the other side and before I even touched it I heard a small crack and the other side a mysterious crack appeared, bugger!
Only option was to put the old stone chipped one back in.
Got that back in, had about a foot to go and, yes you guessed it, that cracked where the stone chips were. Trouble is the screen was completely busted so took it out and fitted the cracked new one again. Went straight in no problem, typical!
All in all a great day achieving nothing!

Was hoping to get the screen replaced today, new screen was cracked before the job was even started!

Why not just find a nice fitter to fit this for you… you not having much luck.
Are you using genuine rubber? Oh & lube well
I had a screen cut to shape & fitted into a surround and left it at the place for a few days. It broke after 3hrs so they had to do it again…free…

Atleast I didn't crack the latest one, it was delivered cracked.
I paid £40 for the original new one so was worth giving it a go.
Back in the day when it was common to have windows held in by rubbers had done quite a few without a problem.
Only really one windscreen down as my original old one had a few MOT failure chops in it.
Windscreen fitter is going to do it when a unbroken screen turns up.

Last time, I gave up and got the garage to do it. The senior mechanic said it had been a while since he'd done a windscreen rubber, and he was going to show the apprentice how it was done.

It took four of us and a good half hour....

I think something has changed with them most likely the quality of the rubbers. I had exactly the same issue when fitting a new screen to my rebuild recently. In the end I removed the frame and got an experienced friend to assist me. I didn't get as far as actually breaking it but i got to the same point several times where if I had continued it would definitely have broken.
Similarly I have fitted defender windscreens previously with no problem (about 10 years ago was the last) and my memory is they just pop into place with the string method. My side window and rear quarters went in with no issue whatsoever using the original seals.

Yes the windscreen fitter did give one of them looks when I told him it was a new rubber.
It's an OEM Allmakes PR2 rubber, if anything it seems a tiny bit too big but fits very well when it's in place. New screen seems a little thicker so all in all it adds up to a disaster in the making.

Must be.
To be fair the original screen needed replacing when I bought the Landy, just got round to having it done.
Happily the new chip is very small and I shall ignore it.
