Hi all,

I had a lazy Sunday so planned to do a little sound proofing of the Defender.

I used Evo Stick Flashband to completely cover the footwells and gearbox tunnel. I also covered the three plates under each seat.

For £30 odd quid it's worth while, but doesn't make an enormous diference. The gear changes are much quieter, and there is much less road noise up front too.

I also have some grey fabric floor tiles which I've used to cover the bulkhead behind the seats (Pics to come).

I now just need to get something that will work well for the main seat box. I think I need some car specific fabric that will wrap around corners well for this?!? Only thing is I don't want to spend much money on it really. Any ideas?

Im sure the county has carpets over the seat box.

Interesting choice. Not sure I would put flashband on the inside of my Defender. It is Bitchumen after all.

Why not? I've used it on mine after reading about it. It's meant to be good to stop the panels vibrating and it doesn't seem to work. I did all my panels, gearbox tunnel, seatbox, floor, interior of the bulkhead and under the bonnet.

Nah its fine. I imagine that WHO article is more for those using bitumen that's heated and brushed on (or whatever other applications). For the amount that's on flashing tape I imagine its no more carcinogenic than air. I could be wrong though

It is of course now under the very thick rubber that surrounds the tunnel and covers the floor, so actual exposure to it is negligible.

The seat box does have a black pleather covering, but this is now very shoddy, and also left quite a bit of the metal exposed. I want to pretty much wrap the box in carpet, both to add a little more plushness, and silence a little more noise.

Thousands of people use bitumen flashing tape to reduce vibrations and add mass to panels. The stuff works ok for the outlay but spending a bit more on purpose made stuff is generally considered better value for money.
Thick closed cell foam on top is the next thing to do if you want to reduce noise levels.

On my floor panels, gearbox tunnel and interior bulkhead ive got flashing tape, rubber backed carpet from a coach and then exmoor trim acoustic matting on top of it. Same with the seatbox.

In the back ive used those EVA foam tiles to fully line the rear of the internal bulkhead, both wheel boxes and the floor, then on the floor ive glued down rubber backed coach carpet and then i have a removal rubber mat on top of that. The hardtop panels are lined with camping mat closed cell foam and im in the process of doing the roof and the front doors with the same.

I certainly do think it makes a huge difference in noise reduction, especially from the engine area. Its still rather noisy but thats due to wind etc... which ill be looking at fixing next.

Oh and dont buy the exmoor trim acoustic matting, its shoite. Especially for what they charge. Ive only got it cos it was free, does make it look a million times better though

Tell me about it! such a waste of money! i spent £40 on those Exmoor sound deadening front matts and they don't make any difference what so ever and, water just runs off them. wish i had just got the much nicer genuine land rover matts.
