I have a 1.8L Freelander 1997 which used to drive fine. It is now misfiring occasionally on idle & most of the time when accelerating. It is at the point now where it splutters at most junctions when trying to pull away. It would normally clear itself when lifting off the throttle and puting it back on again but even this is failing to work now. Sometimes you can feel like it (whatever it is) clears and then it rockets away fine.

We have changed the plugs & leads and have recently fitted a new fuel filter which seemed to make a difference for about a day!

Any ideas as to what might be wrong would be greatfully received!!

Mine started to do this then a few days later the head gasket went!

Could be a number of things, does not necessarily mean the head gasket is going... but could be the beginnings of a failing head gasket if coolant is getting into a cylinder.

Are you losing any coolant at all? Notice any leaks anywhere?

Could be dirty injectors.

Like above, try some Redex... the K series actually likes a bit of Redex now and again.

Are you sure it's misfiring at all? It could splutter without necessarily misfiring. Check air filter and pipes.
 
Head Gasket has already been done and have put redex in as well. Was worse driving today, missing/juddering even sat at 70mph.

Will check for leaks and check the fuel injectors. Thanks
 
Well I am still non the wiser. The car is currently in the garage (reputable LR garage) and they are baffled to.

So far this is what has been done to it:

New plugs & leads
Dizzy cap
Coil
Fuel Filter
Crank Sensor
Lambda Sensor
ECU has been cleared of faults
Has been run without exhaust to check for blockages
HG checked and ok

Any ideas??? Am getting desperate now!! I want my hippo back!
 
Fingers crossed the Freelander is fixed. :)

Apparently the fuel pump has been known to cause misfires. Design fault??? dont know. Anyway, they modified the pump and put the old crank sensor back on (turns out the new one was knackered!) and it is all running fine now.

No reply so I expect the problem was solved..

I have the same problem and have just taken the sender/pump/filter out.(all one unit.)
easy but a smelly job. I smell of petrol now and is wont go away.

you cannot do anything to the pump. the only thing you can do is chenge the filter. I expect they said they adjusted the pump because it sounds like its worth more money than just changing a filter. (albeit the filter is a sod to get into without breaking the unit.

Im going to replace the filter tomorrow.

O.K.

Took an extra day to get the filter as the spares dept closed before I got there.

anyway. fitted the filter tonight...

went for a test drive and works a treat..
Im a very happy bunny..:D

no misfires and its more responsive to the throttle.
it seems like it has more power too. Bonus.

Cost - £26.93 inc VAT with a bit of discount.

this was the OEM kit from landy direct.
I did try to flush out the old one and got lots of crud out of it.
However i decided to get a new one as it wasnt worth the hasstle if it didnt get enough out it would have meant stripping it down again.

time taken - 2 hours. because I didnt know what I was doing. if I did it again would have taken me 1 hr to strip and refit.

just make sure you have the kit before you start - not like me...:rolleyes:

hope this save someone else the expence and anguish that we all feel when it seems to go tits up..
