I do have the rave manual, but doesn't help when it says in bold "see here for how to do this bit" but there is no clickable link and struggle to find the bit it's on about lol

Think this is all beyong me, fixing cars is beyond me unless there is a good guide.

For example, not sure how to remove the water pump and stat, how to release tension on the belt etc etc :(

tension on the belt is easy, get under the car at the front and you will see this tensioner use a 13mm spanner here...

tension will release and you can remove belt

ah, okay cheers.

does the coolant need draining before I go removing the water pump and stat?

the bolt on the viscous fan standing in front of the car looking into the engine, does it turn left to loosen?

No to your right to loosen (providing you're on the 32mm part)

you will need to lock the engine to stop it turning over

Locking the engine will do feck all as it will just slip on the belt, it will normally undo with a sharp tap from a 50lb hammer, it undoes in the direction the fan normally rotates i.e. it's a a left hand thread.

That looks nothing like the tensioner on my diesels:confused:

Hope it does cause that is what they look like. Eccentric on the 8 mm bolt and an internal Allen key hole to add tension. Might look different with the dust cap on. :);)

Looks like my A/C belt tensioner, has a large hex cutout for an Allen key to add tension then tighten the 13 m bolt. You have become a proper mechanic Keith, you have a 50lb hammer:);)

Proper mechanics don't have 50 lb hammers. Only a 2 lb one, which is taken under any vehicle with you at all times, to throw at the apprentices ankles when he hands you the wrong size of spanner. :D:D:D

So that's were I was going wrong, bugger:D:D:D ySo, why don't you post your location, there may be someone close that can help:)

Except he needs to remove the main belt to do the water pump:) the tensioner for that as you well know is the spring loaded jobby at the top.

Mine on my 99 4.6 thor engine must be different to all of yours used a big adjustable spanner and a flat blade screwdriver and it loosened anticlockwise

It is indeed, but as he was asking about air con removal took it someone was telling him how to remove belt from compressor. Side cutters work well. Having just re read the post i see what you mean. The J Crash info was a little duff.:D:D:D
