Hi all,

My name's Mike and as you can all tell brand new here.
I got into off roading with a few mates, and ended up buying a 93 200tdi with suspension and body lift, breather Kit, 33" wheels and the list goes on.

1st problem is now that I've got one I'm considering getting rid of it to get my own standard one and work on myself - think I've got the bug already.

2nd Problem, was heading down an A road at 60(ish) for about 20mins and when I turned off at the junction I wanted and started slowing down, the oil light started flashing as I changed down gears and as I came to a total stop it stalled! Started first time and ran fine until the next time I stopped. A few days later the same thing happened again but only when on a bit of a run. When doing short journeys or slow speeds off road haven't had a problem.

Any idea's of what I should check first?

Did it start cutting out as you were slowing down. Has been known that the diesel filter can be clogged and as you go down the box and the revs increase, the engine suffers from fuel starvation cutting it out. Just an idea.
 
check the sediment filter aswell if it got one behind driver rear wheel mounted inside chassis leg
 
Worth checking that the lift pump is up to scratch, take the pipe off and it should squirt out under a lot of pressure when engine is turned over:)

Yes it did start cutting out when I started to slow down but as soon as I accelerated again as roundabout was clear it carried on fine.
Apparently the both the fuel and oil filters were changed about 9months ago and only done about 1500miles since.
I will check all filters anyway followed by lift pump - but assuming these are all okay - any other suggestions?
 
Right - it doesn't seem to be any of the filters!!
But what i did find out - is that if i park up and sit in neutral (after it's been parked up or once the engine is warm after a drive) and rev the engine (just once) and fully take my foot off the accelerator it tries to conk out as the rev-ometer hits the bottom of the dial.
I will try the lift pump another evening but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Could be lift pump, fuel sender or even ecu. Sounds like it's getting fuel when idling. Oil light will come on as your engine cuts out.
 
I will still check the lift pump, but speaking to the previous owner that was apparently replaced a couple years ago before I got it and has only done 2.5k miles since. (it's always been used as a second vehicle)
And as for getting fuel while it's idling - i'm unsure - as now you've said that - when sat in neutral the engine seems a lot smoother when I am revving it very slightly than at idle.
Thanks for suggestions so far . . . something tells me I won't be going pay and play on Friday but spending the day working this one out!

Did you clean the sedimentor as Robin suggested..?
 
Vapour lock is caused when a volatile liquid turns to a gas inside an injection pump,which is a hydraulic pump and designed to pump non compressable liquids-basically pump stops pumping until it has liquid to work on
 
Just to throw this in the mixing pot, you say the engine is not as smooth on idle. Is the idle speed set correctly?
 
I am going to try adjusting the idle speed tomorrow and see if it makes a difference, but seems odd that it's been running fine for a few months now, and can't imagine the idle speed adjusting itself as such?

Have you cleaned the fuel sedimenter yet?? This could well be the problem.


It's a cylinder device a bit like a filter, attached to the inside of the chassis rail at the drivers side rear wheelarch.

You need to remove the bowl and clean it - there's almost certainly loads on pondlife stuff in there.

1. Take an 11m ring spanner and remove the bolt from the top centre of the assembly;

2. Unless it's been off recently - highly unlikely - the bowl will be stuck on the rubber seal. Tap the bowl with a rubber hammer or similar to break the seal. Remove bowl, clean and re-install.
DO NOT TOUCH THE WHITE PLASTIC TAP - IT WILL BREAK !!!!!!!!
