I have just ordered some stainless Flowmaster 40 mufflers to give it that classic hot rod rumble - crackly and deep at idle and under load but not boomy when cruising.

I see you live in West Sussex - the car is being built at Ganders Gate Farm, Glasshouse lane in Kirdford (just off A272 near Wisborough Green) if you ever want to pop in - Derek is very friendly and has spares, breakers,parts etc and a wealth of knowledge. He is a proper Engineer, if you know what I mean.

Be careful, though - he only speaks Land Rover.

Update - body is being assembled - mechanics and electrics virtually complete - pics below - note suspension is not lifted - the chassis is supported on the ramp so it looks higher - car will actually be lower than standard by 30mm.

Also I assume you are Landyzone's largest v8?!

The only one I know of that is bigger is a guy in the west country who has a 454 CI big-block chevy (7.2 litre) in his competition off-roader

He has terrible problems keeping it cool, though and has two rads in the back of the car as well as the one in the front!

Partially surprised about the cooling though, I mean, they worked alright in the American cars!

We have a powerboat with 2x 454 big blocks and although cooing isn't a problem (in fact it is not easy getting boat engines warm enough) I know for sure that the exhaust water makes for a lovely hot shower!

We used to have a ski boat (again big block as it happens) and we fitted a t piece into one of the cooling outlets so you could hot shower when you came out if the lake in winter, was cracking :D

Those days are over sadly and the current boat hasn't moved for 5 years, but maybe one day soon the motors will run again, the sound of the two in harmony is quite wonderful at certain rpms :)
 
Oh and they redline at 4200! :D

my red-line ain't much higher - 6000 - but power tails off after 5000 and torque peak is 449 lbs/ft at 3850 rpm.

But I built it like that - for torque - has 350lbs at 2000rpm - very flat. Also unstressed, and in a Land Rover that is somewhat important.

You can get small-block strokers and big-blocks up to 8750 rpm with Dart blocks, manic camshafts, titanium internals , Victor manifolds etc as per the nascar boys but they require some SERIOUS maintenance.

The off-roader i was on about with the cooling problems is fine on the road, it's when he is crawling around quarries etc that it gets hot.

A Dart Block is a very very expensive chevy casting with a all sorts of strengthening built in to take the punishment for very high revs

A bit like having a forged crank rather than a cast one

They are available in this country from Real Steel - at 4 times the price of a chevy casting! But they are guaranteed never to fail.

The nascar guys throw them away after two seasons.

Is it possible to source these blocks from NASCAR?

There must be some back handers going on at least but I suppose you gotta know the right guy and being in the uk that's not easy!

I have so much American car want its not true.

My pals and I pass around various pictures of classic American cars over text message etc and it does not make my pain any easier.

Short answer is I can't afford one :(
