But the trouble here is, the "in general" statement. As most diesel engines are or where massively overbuilt, often under powered and usually had links to agricultural, heavy plant or marine engines.

It is a fallacy to delude yourself or try and convince others that ANY diesel engine is always more reliable than ANY petrol engine.

Which is the point in hand, old diesel engines are not really akin to modern ones with carbon blocks, DOHC, CRD and multi turbo setups.

And I'm willing to bet, if you are UK/EU based, then you'll have largely dealt with fairly high state of tune petrol engines. As that is the norm in this part of the world.

eh?

Calling a diesel p38a too slow is one thing, but now you've gone to far. Are you really trying to say you see no point in sports cars, supercars, performance saloons or hot hatches? If so, that's quite a blinkered opinion to have.

For the record, once you get out of the SE or cities, there are plenty of places in the UK to enjoy powerful cars.

The speed limit in this country is 70 MPH or are you unaware of that. Owning a powerful car is down to personal choice that is true. But it is pointless having a car that will do 150 MPH or higher when the speed limit is 70. All you are doing is massaging an ego. If you want to spend money feeding your pet with fuel be my guest.

Have to say, I have never owned a car who's top speed was 70 or less (petrol and diesel). Besides, it's just a few hours drive to get on the autobahn :p

So you are going to buy a powerful car and drive to Germany so you can do more than 70 MPH. That sounds really sensible. It does not matter what car you choose to own the speed limit in this country is 70 MPH. What part of that do you not understand? I chose to own a car that will do that speed with easy in great comfort and carry seven people or five people and all their luggage using a minimal amount of fuel. I do not need a bloody great V8 under the bonnet to do that. It's a case of simple logic.

I understand it perfectly but to argue that a V8 is pointless because the speed limit in this country is 70mph is not simple logic.

If logic was the deciding factor, by your definitions, then we shouldn't be in a position to buy cars in this country that do more than 70mph.

A country full of limited Citroen C2's and SmartforTwo's would be in order.

Not sure where Wammers argument would leave the likes of Aston Martin, McLaren, Noble, Jaguar etc.....maybe someone should tell them about the speed limit.

Isn't the "which is better" argument somewhat pointless? Different people like different things. There is no right or wrong. End of.

Now, can anyone tell me whether blue is a better colour than red? I can't decide.

I have said you can have whatever you want it is no skin off my nose. Others are using the counter argument for having a V8, more power than the diesel quicker acceleration and so on. If that is what you want by all means do it. It's just that i see no point in being 5 or 6 seconds quicker to the speed limit. And burning much more fuel for the privilege of being able to do so. May make sense to some, makes none to me. If i want to hear a proper V8 i start my Porsche up.:p:D

I did think this was a thread about the 4.6 petrol P38 and the diesel P38. If you want to start talking about poser cars that is a different ball game. This is about travelling (In this country) at 70 MPH (the speed limit) in as much comfort as possible for the least cost. I which case the diesel P38 wins hands down.

It is indeed, but someone started making the point that V8's are pointless due to a 70mph speed limit:rolleyes:

PS, mine was averaging 19mpg on LPG @ 59p/ltr on the last trip to London. Diesel wins hands down you say :p:D

Are you honestly proclaiming to have never driven above 70mph?

And BTW, powerful doesn't have to mean top speed, but how it might get to 70mph.

Think I have made that point twice before in this thread, but the V8's keep coming back for more:):decision::bored::bored::bored::bored:

Yes many times but not since the speed limit was introduced. I have driven many very powerful things but getting to 70 MPH was to be honest not a priority at the time.

course it is.. unless you like driving around in a fire engine.

Having driven all 3 (4.6, 4.0 and 2.5) there is no doubt the 4.6 is the most refined. Acceleration aside it just purrs along in a most satisfying manner. On LPG it is a little rough at idle but other than that it sounds gorgeous. The engine HAS to have been looked after and preferably top-hatted.

The diesel is pretty bullet-proof (hot-fix aside) if you don't mess with it but a LOT more agricultural driving along, especially at anything over 50 mph. I once even put a pair of ear-defenders in the cubby-hole for when I was doing a 600 mile journey in a bit of a rush.

There's not a lot in terms of performance. These aren't hot-hatches. There's decent and there's rather nice. Even the auto-diesel is adequate.

You either have very good ears or the Diesel you drove was knackered mine is inaudible over 50 mph.
