come on guys DESPERATE FOR ADVICE this is my 1st and possibly my last range rover m reg 4.6.
Probably heard it all before but can you fix it.
starts and just runs for a few secs running erratically and cant push the throttle as it cuts out. pops through the exhaust and you would think the leads were in the wrong order (there not)
had new plugs (good ones) leads , coil pack , fresh fuel..
took the plug off the mass air and made no difference,
you would think the timing was out .
plenty spark, plenty fuel pressure , excellent compression
getting a reading off the cam and crank sensors (crypton tune guy says)
we cant get a reading from the computer even though there is power.
head gaskets 600 miles ago

lots of help needed before i become a basket case!!!!! helllllllllllllp::

Did they check the liners when they did the head gasket?

Hi , bought the car with the gaskets already done , had a full rebuild in 2008 with receipts for £4700.
bought the car off an old retired gent and he reckons it drove alright for around 600 miles and developed a slight misfire which eventually got worse annd did not want to spend any money on it as he gave up driving ..
there where i came in and purchased it as a poor tick over hoping it was not a bad job . but am i wrong
cheers rob

It may not be, but the most satisfactory way of being sure it isn't liners is to ask an MOT garage to do the following.

Loosen header tank cap and start engine.

Put exhaust Gas analyser under bonnet with engine running (back ground Hydrocarbons (HC) )

Now over the open header tank- if it jumps in HC you have liner/cracked head or head gasket failed.

The above test is far more superior to a liquid test.

can the timing slip on these beasts?

If it had it would be normal to expect noise with it- liners are notorious on all 94mm blocks 3.9,4.2 and 4.6 and bigger.

My suggestion will 100% rule out head gasket or liner issues before you plough time and money into it.

been looking on the site and i have found a few different opinions on the cylinder which is classed as number 1 most say its as you look in the bonnet its 2 4 6 8 on the left but a few others have the other way round
can you confirm out there as some say on this model and year there were 2 firing order used. ?
now my heads really done in !!! by the way fanatic i live in county durham but i see you live in somerset and so do my parents , they live in wellington.

as you look in bonnet no1 is on rh side if you look closely you will see that back sits a little forward of other that side rh is 1357

hi , back again with the problem on the m reg 4.6 starts rough and pops and cut out after a few seconds
fitted new coil pack, leads , plugs , crank sensor , cam sensor, air mass.
engine had a full rebuild a few years ago costing £4800.
has full compression on all cylinders , plenty of fuel which has the right flow and tank return.
full spark. had the local mot station test the vapour under the cap , its fine.
when firing it sounds like the timing is out and not quite right ,if it had a distributor cap you would turn a little to get the timing right but of course it does not have one.
all reading on the computer look fine , is it possible that the timing is out a little ? if so what can be done or any ideas whats wrong????????

not the advice i was hoping for , was hoping for advice from someone with mechanical knowledge .
any mechanics out there ?

Does it run any better when reved? Have you cheched for obstructions or splits in the induction system. Or the throttle butterfly and idle control valve. Are all the lead ends tight fit in the plugs and plugs torqued up fully. injectors ok? ie fully torqued up and not loose same with the pipework. And the wireing harnesses for loose or corroded contacts

Hi , been ages since I have been on as I got rid of the range rover with problems .
Bought myself a freelander diesel 1998
Guy who sold it said it sounded like the brakes were binding , it did to me also.
When driving it sounds like binding but also has vibration at all times.
Prop is still attached
Took it to the local garage and the said its not binding and there feels like no play on the bearings
Could possibly also sound like a rumble in the background when driving along with the vibration , it feels like the vibration gets less the faster you go .
Have I bought another bummer?
Or are the some other solutions out there?
Any help would be appreciated

Yep you have bought a wrong un, points to VCU, remove rear prop and see what happens when ya drive it
