Compression
Leaky leak offs
Timing
Staicking stop solenoid
Other drain back issue

Does it smoke a load once it catches?
If not, I would suggest a fueling issue (if the fuel is being supplied, when it catches, all the unburnt will burn off - if there is no smoke, then that may indicate lack of fuel at injectors)

Injection pump air leak, fuel draining back to the tank, try filling the tank and park the Disco nose downhill overnight if possible, if it starts easier that will confirm a possible throttle shaft or cover seal leak.

+1, Check the voltage in and out of the glow plug relay, does it click when you turn the ignition on ?

When it's cold my EDC auto will not start without working plugs.

First I'd check the battery before all that above. My battery was showing 13volts, would crank for a minute but still would not get the car started. Put a new battery in and it starts within 5 seconds in the cold. Jump start it off a running car in the morning, if it starts quickly, you know your battery is gone.

I put a new battery on about 2 months ago

When its been started it runs great then if left for a while it will start lovely only seems cold morning's it don't like

What CCA rating? I'm sure its probably something else but I push the possibility of the battery as Ive seen so many people pull their hair out over issues when it was just a crap/knackered battery.

fyi, good 300 doesn't need glows atm. i still haven't wired mine up yet from a year or so ago. i'd look at fuel leakback to start with. filters, sedimenter, leak off pipes, holes, etc etc try hand priming the lift pump before you start.

Sometimes it does puff some smoke

Electronic diesel control....the injection pump has a black box on it with wires feeding in.

Some 300's have them some don't

I'm going to what I think is easy check first
So what's not easy about filling the tank and backing the beast up a slope to park o'night?
And if you do not have the EDC pump, check the security/integrity of the wire connection to the fuel solenoid.
