Good evening chaps,
While sorting out some unrelated fuel pump problems, I've noticed the my 1996 Discovery 300TDi is fitted with the "wrong" engine timing gears, as explained in this article.
My timing belt pulleys have the raised shoulder guides on the tensioner, and none on the crankshaft gear. However, the belt was changed 20,000 miles ago and there are no visible signs of wear to the belt, in fact it looks as good as new.
Do you think it would be a good idea to purchase the Repair Option kit 1, (STG 4095K) as reccommended by Land Rover, or do you think that if it doesn't appear to be a problem, to leave it alone?
Note that I have discovered the crankshaft seal behind the crankshaft gear to be leaking oil, so I will need to remove this anyway in order to fit a new seal.
I am reluctant to spend money I don't need to, but on the other hand perhaps the timing belt is the one place where corners should not be cut..
