I've just replaced my 300tdi timing belt . I've come across packing washer err1973 while perusing the internet , apparently for the idler pulley . I didn't see anything like it when doing the change . Could I have lost it and what would the consequences be if it's missing ? Thanks , Gerry .

Maybe this is why you could not get your cam belt on the other day?
I would say the washer is quite important as it spreads the load of the faster onto the pulley centre.
Have you got it mixed up or doubled up with the tensioner washer?
The tensioner washer is slotted.

Lynall , this gets worse . I didn't see a tensioner washer either ! Just a slot in the tensioner ..

I think the idler and tensioner is quite thin metal hence the washers/spacers to clamp and spread the load.
Most likely not your fault and may have been missing for ages?

Back in 2015 when I first/last did this job I got the revised kit and would have just put on whatever was in that . I came across something last night suggesting that the spacer washer wasn't recommend for the shorter idler stud that came with the revised kit . And looking at Britannica's video he doesn't seem to be using any washers either .
