Daft question, but is the tensioner on the right way round?
If you haven't done one before, the printed instructions I had with a dayco kit a few years back weren't clear. I put the new one on the same way the old one came off-1000 miles later I was replacing pushrods and the timing belt kit again.
Embarrassing but luckily no major damage. Also discovered the PO had shifted the fuel pump timing by 1 tooth of the belt. :-(
Changed my alternator last week and it started squeeling after. Cleaned all belts as I thought it couldd be crap in the grooves but no joy, oiled all bearings and moving bits, still no joy. Did the penny trick - BINGO!
Does this sound pretty standard for a 300tdi and like the penny thing will fix it??
Cheers folks
just to put my 2 pence in on this one...
I have a 1996 300tdi which was recently re-built. No noise from the belt before it was re-built (although at that point the rest of the car was knackered!) but since its been back on the road the noise from the belt is driving me mad!!
It is every time i start the engine. when i dip the clutch, the noise stops but only until I lift the clutch again! It gets louder as the revs go up when accelerating and then when the engine gets to the correct temperature the squeeking seems to stop...
