Sorted problem the fuel sender.

1996 P reg with 150,000 on the clock.

I am now stil having the same problem which seems to be getting worse.

the car cuts out and then one minute starts 1st time then the next take 30 turns to start.

I am now thinking along the lines of the dreaded SPIDER.

I have check the operation of the stop solenoid which seems fine.

The querie i have before I start ripping the dash out is....

on the connection for the stop solenoid there are 3 small wires, yet only one is connected to the top of the solenoid?... is this normal?

Please advise guys.... please lol.....:confused::confused:

have you disconnected the wire off the solonoid and then just run a live wire to the solonoid? if your disco runs fine like this then you will have an immobiliser problem.this is a quick test that doesnt involve stripping anything.

this test best idea...not sure if theres alot to go wrong with the stop solenoid, only time i had 1 go wrong and the car wouldnt turn off by the key...

get to the local main stealers they do a spyder bypass plug if this is the problem will cost ya a small fortune of around £7.00

It sounds as if the spider is playing up. Easy fix, you can get a landrover part to replace the spider. There's a thread on here somewhere about it. The part costs about 7 quid from the dealers (it's a very common problem.

People,
What the F**k is the dreaded SPIDER?

Surely you must know that? It's the little eight legged thing that lives in your landy, you know - you never see him but he always leaves you a nice new web in the morning... Sometimes if you drive with your window open he can get sucked out of the car and then your beloved disco will never work the same again, until you buy the bypass lead from LR :D

I have just read a really good thread on how to get to and repair the spider, i dont think it would take me much over an hour to take out the radio, heater controls etc so if i can plan it right i wil be having a bash tomorrow during lunch :O)
my best mate is our top electronics engineer and he will have no worries in re-soldering all the connections. fingers crossed

i have heard its a hard job to do but having just cured this problem it is very easy and took me about a hour and a half start to finnish :)

the spider unit once opened up has two quite large solderd joints compaird to the rest, you cant miss them.
the last pic is the joint that caused me the cutting out problems i was having,

just resolder the two joints and rebuild the center of the dash :)

real easy job to do:)

took me all of 40 minutes to strip the dash, I though great wont take too long....

pulled the centre console out..... no blinkin spider box!!!

Where do I go from here? I had this morning when I opened the car using central locking the red LED my the speedo was flashing for a few seconds.... any other suggestions please???

I have removed the spring and plunger from the stop solenoid and the problem is still exactly the same....

Any ideas please guys?....

Had another thought, I turned the pump up around 6 months ago, now i have replaced sender unit,
lift pump

It my be over fuelling??

When it starts up it runs on idle all day long as soon as u rev it over 2500 the revs drop and it cuts out.
white ( fuel ) smoke comes out the exhaust when I rev it....

unburnt diesel! if you turned the pump up that long ago i dont think that this is your problem but fuel pump timing may have jumped a tooth and its not that hard to check.
