Hi I am looking for a defender 90 that has been fully rebuilt and in great condition . It has to be registered before 1990 so it can be imported as a classic It is for my brothers 50th birthday who is living in Malta. He wants to make into a convertible and enjoy as a second car . He would prefer automatic but would have an auto box put in if necessary . I am a landy man myself for 30 years and luv em! . Any help in locating the right car would be appreciated.

Welcome.

be careful if it has a galv chassis as numbers won’t be there and that may cause problems, don’t know how strict Malta is?

Lived here 25 years , imported 7 cars

yes they do , no problem .

If none of the 7 were Landies with a replaced chassis @marjon 's query is worth bearing in mind.

The legal situation here is complicated.

It's illegal to stamp a chassis without a licence, most major manufacturers of replacement chassis' have stopped stamping them leaving rebuilders the choice between having an unstamped chassis or illegally stamping it themselves.

Depending on how hot the authorities are there either option could possibly throw up a world of hurt.

I don't know how it would apply in Malta but generally considered best advice here when replacing the chassis is to cut out and keep the original chassis number, keep proof the original chassis has been scrapped and proof of purchase of direct replacement chassis.

Hi and welcome.

Your requirements sound quite specific. Would it be better to source a vehicle and get a specialist to rebuild it to your spec? You would have proof of purchase of the old vehicle, chassis and the work done which may help with importing, in addition to Blue Beasty’s good Advice.

Welcome from me too...…….

Good luck in your search if you cant find one I will build one for you if you send all the parts. :D

There's a number of garages in the uk who sell vehicles after they have rebuilt them. Be careful as a number of them are well dodgy when considering the wrecks they sell. Make sure you ask for advice on yer vehicle of choice before buying it.
