Thankyou, thats the kind of thing i was wanting to hear. What kind of HP can the 300tdi be tuned upto without ruining reliability? I believe the dash board on the 300tdi isnt as good as the td5 too, am i right?
The answers are no different from your other thread.

The Td5 is a superior engine in every measurable way. But it is slightly more complex.

The are tens of 1000’s of td5’s On the road. They are more than reliable enough for the most part. And tdi’s Can still go wrong.

You can tune a Tdi at home for free. If you splash out on a bigger inter cooler they will go a lot better. But not in the same league as the Td5. A tuned Tdi will match a stock Td5. The Td5 also benefits from a bigger inter cooler and a remap. So a small outlay to get. Do this and the Td5 will make 50% more power than a Tdi does at the wheels.

Dashes are essentially the same. Although air con and electric windows were options on the Td5.
 
As according the your profile you're 16 have you looked how much a tuned td5 would cost to insure? :rolleyes:
That is correct, iam 16 at the moment. I havnt looked at insurance prices yet but hopefully £2500 - £3000 should get me fully comp insurance. Do you think ive got a chance of getting insurance for that money?

Why don't you try a couple of comparison sites just change your date of birth. Just be aware that most companies won't touch anything modified especially performance wise.

You may struggle finding a company that will insure you at all, because of your age. If I were you I'd look at a Suzuki Jimny for my first 4x4. Much cheaper, very capable. If you insist on get a Land Rover then get a TDI and don't tune it. This is after all your first car, statistically speaking, you are going to crash it.

Im hooked on a Land Rover. So Maybe a TDI is the way to go if I can’t get insurance for a TD5.
 
Showing my age here, but "my" first LR was the farms Series IIA !! - nothing wrong with it as a first "car" either.....:)

Might be easier to get insurance on a Tdi first ( but ask some brokers ... rather than the comparison sites which can, IME, be complete pants when it comes to older vehicles :rolleyes: ), and then tune it up in stages ....

With mine, I am pleased that I have the simplicity of the Tdi, but significantly more urge than a standard TD5 :)

Ill try to get some quotes! Im hoping i can get a TD5 but if it comes down to it ill more than happily settle with a 300tdi.
 
They are both fantastic engines, far better than any Jap nonsense they put into trucks these days

Thats my opinion too! I hope i can get a TD5 just for the reason that itll be more happy on longer journeys which require higher speeds.

With respect, that's not really right - It's the TB that is the issue on a deafener - change for a higher ratio one, and the gearing, in high range, is the same as D1/RRC - and therefore far more relaxed .... :)

Ill have to read up on it! You hit the spot btw, i do have insomnia so sleeping for more than 4 hours or so is something alien to me lol. Im not going to be doing long distances in the defender as itll just be used to get from my home to college, then towing heavy trailers, towing my dirt bike trailer to and from tracks and commuting to work so not much motorway work really.

Depending on how heavy the trailer is you may have to do an additional test
 
What are you planning on having on the trailer?
Hay bales, dirt bikes, we have a 3.5 tonne dirt bike trailer with beds and a kitchen in aswell as obviously a workshop in the back where the bikes are put in to travel. Also a little massey ferguson 135 aswell as a few other things.
