Right,

Im in the process of selling my 90 and the buyer quite rightly wants to check all the numbers!

The Vin number in the window and the chassis number all check out

BUT,

the engine number which i found easily has a letter missing!

The Number should read (from V5) 16LA***** (* being a number)

however the actual number reads (from engine) 16L*****

So im Missing the A? is this the same as everyone else or have i got a misprint/dodgy engine?

understandably by buyer is a little anxious, being a copper n all!

why do you think it should be 16la and not 16l ,lr usually only use 3 digits for unit type before number
 
Thats what i thought,

my Logbook/v5 shows it as 16LA not 16L? just wanted to know if this is normal? or if there was a typo on the v5 or a mis stamp on the engine,

also - its a bit all over the place, im presuming this is just a typical lazy land rover builder thing, as the vin number is similar - but the chassis number is perfect - very lazy not to get them all 100%

usually number is fairly good especially later dot punch type but stamped ones can look amatuerish but in good line ,which may mean someones redone yours often for legitimate reasons ,but ?
 
mine was a standard stamp one, so working round some of the bumps and notches in the engine shape looks quite difficult - its not that bad, have tried to upload a photo but photobucket is being a pain in the a** basically i need somone who as a 300tdi to say my v5 says **LA and my engine says **L so i know im not alone and that its just one of thise things.....
 
My V5 says 16L which is what 300Tdi's should be
Sounds like a typo, what's the first number on your engine - 4?
Tell him to google 300Tdi engine numbers to prove it's the right engine.

looking at the other side of the coin the prospective buyer could be after the matching vin and engine numbers to clone the id of your vehicle.:eek::eek::eek:

The Land Rover 300Tdi engine was an evolution upon the earlier 200Tdi with many improvements and refinements for better on road performance. However, it has the same capacity and power as its predecessor and slightly worse fuel consumption, which has lead some people to downgrade to the 200Tdi given the option. The early 300Tdis had premature timing belt failures resulting in catastrophic engine damage. Land Rover issued a repair kit which could easily rectify issues with guide pulley misalignment.

Land Rover continued to make the 300Tdi alongside for the export market as ‘Rest of the World’ spec, where EU regulations were not applicable, and for the British Army who deemed the Electronic control unable to guarantee protection against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons.

Since the 300Tdi engine is longer than the 200Tdi, the engine was moved further forward in the bay, requiring different engine mounts.

EGR and EDC

Some Tdis (engine serial prefix 23L) have Exhaust Recirculation Regulators (EGRs) or Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) which limit the “mechanical only ” nature of these pre-Td5 engines. Which engines have these features seems to be unrelated to their year built, but you can tell from the VIN number. The character after the body type shows the type of engine, e.g. SALLDHMF – 110 SW 200Tdi/300Tdi without EDC/Cat or SALLDHA6 110 Hardtop 200Tdi/300Tdi with EDC/Cat. The last character, F or 6 refers to the type of engine in the Land Rover.

The EGR recirculates Nitrous oxides into the engine inlet to be reburnt, which lowers the intake air temperature and improves efficiency, and also burns more of the oxides resulting in “cleaner” exhaust emissions. However, over time they can become clogged with exhaust soot and impair performance, so it is recommended to remove it.

The EDC is different fuel injection pump which connects to the accelerator through an electronic signal as opposed to the standard steel cable. It is more common on the Discovery 300Tdi.

Compatible Gearboxes

Has the R380 as standard but also fits the LT77 by changing the engine back plate to a 2.5NA model and using the LT77 Bell housing, or by removing a single stud from the engine and using the LT77 Bell housing.
