Hey Folks,

I'm just about to have a go at replacing the clutch on my 300tdi disco. I think the fork may have gone:doh:!! The pedal has dropped to the floor and does nothing else - all fluids ok, no leaks etc.:confused:

A garage replaced the fork for me a year or so ago, but obviously not with a reinforced/hd one!!! Cost 500 quid!!!!!:eek:

So, I shall delve in there my self. I have found the brill "how to" that is floating around the forums, and I will use that as my guide.:D

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if the threaded bar that people are using is smaller diameter than the bolt holes, and is it used more as a guide, with a nut on t'other end to pull it, or is it actually threaded into the bolt holes? If the latter is the case, is the thread size known? eg, M12?, M10?

As I have not done this before/yet, it's difficult to picture the exact scenario, I'm sure it'll all become clear at the time - so excuse my query if this seems a silly question:eek:!!!!

you could use m10 threaded bar to go in any 2 of bottom for bolt holes or remove 2 studs further up ,but dont pull box to engine using nuts ,feel it in or use springs in front of nuts so pressure is applied ,if you have access to engine crane you can support box with a chain through the tunnel in the car and is reasonably easy to realign box to engine ,vehicle bottle jack on panhard rod to sump helps support engine in right position
 
Great, thanks. I'll get some M10 then. I unfortunately do not have access to an engine crane of any sort, so will be shuffling with trolly jack!!

Could you just clarify where is best to position the bottle jack for supporting engine? I don't trust my sump to support the weight? Or is that just me being paranoid?

Hire an engine crane before you have a disaster
 
just done mine m8...

was a breeze...

used the guide on ere..

leave cross member in. trolley jack under handbrake dum (make sure handbrake is on)..

then i used the disco jack further forward..

dont use too long lengths of threaded bar.. was sliding g'box forward and wouldnt go as end of threaded bar was catchin on some ribbin on the bottom of the box..

get someone to lay under back axle and use there foot on brake drum to push it forward as you guide it forward..

i borrowed an alignment tool from local garage to get plate centered, i believe this made the job a lot easier..

oh and loads of extensions for ya socket set to get to the two top bolts on bell housing..

It seemed a daunting task initially, but the more folks I read and speak to that have done it, the better it is seeming!

I used a strap looped over the roof and through doors to loop a rope through to lift in and adjust gearbox position. Much easier to wiggle it about with it hanging rather than supported from underneath.
 
Great idea, I had thought of similar too, but unsure as to whether or not the frame could take the weight!!! But, If you've done it... and I suppose it is designed for structural support anyway, so must be able to take a bit!!!

i was cackin it b4 i started too..

but went very smooth and exactly as the guide showed...
