Just renewed the back box on the discovery and put a straight pipe replacing the center box. Can I also get rid of the catalytic converter type thingy and if so where could I get a plain pipe from.

Brilliant ordered got a fair pile of parts sitting here now. Nearly ready for a good dose of tlc in sept once I actually get a week off work. Cheers
 
Is the flexy the better buy to avoid the vibrations from the exhaust system.

I've done a number of these now and always used the cheaper non-flexy type with no additional vibe problems at all. If anything with the cat out of the equation the engine seems smoother.

gone for the one with the de cat flexi pipe and middle box removed. Along with the egr removed intercooler and inlet cleaned out new lift pump and maybe i'll have a little bit move poke.

no not really,i prefer solid pipe as you can do away with the front awkward hangar ,though solid require you to jack chassis away from axle to give clearance to fit flexi will fit without jacking
 
Surely, with the recent changes to the MOT rules, fitting a de-cat pipe to a 300Tdi will mean an automatic failure?

Regs relating to DPFs are unlikely be an issue for mid 1990s Defenders and Discos, the new regs really apply to first used from the 1st August 2008 cars, where a DPF is fitted to enable the engine to meet euro 5 or 6 regs. a 300TDi or TD5 would meet the regs in place at the time without a DPF fitted, so should not be a problem for an MOT. A light will illuminate on the dash when 'regeneration' of the DPF is required ...

Of more concern for MOT testers (and those who have removed their cats/DPFs) is the requirement that after the end of March next year, they will be required to invest in expensive Schrodinger gauges to measure whether original spec vehicle emissions devices are present and functioning properly...

No, I didn't mean a DPF - and yes I do know the difference between a DPF and a CAT.

You might like to read the first part of this https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...ata/file/275427/mot-special-notice-1-2014.pdf where it makes no reference to the age of the vehicle in terms of exclusions but requires a simple visual check of whether there is a CAT fitted, or not. If the original vehicle specification included a CAT then removing it will result in an MOT failure. All 300Tdi engined vehicles had CATs fitted as standard to meet emissions regulations at the time.
 
Seems to be a common misconception on here that the 300tdi carried a DPF rather than a catalytic converter.
I've had 2x 300tdi Discovery now and weighed both of the catalytic converters in at the same time at EMR. I got £124 for the pair.
DPFs are worth nowhere near that value.

Where are you getting this information from Munster? I can't find any reference to it either on-line or in the MOT testers manual. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something, mate.

A gauge to "measure" emission devices are present, now that is futuristic, I thought that that would still have been visual.

The kit to measure the pollutants within the vehicle exhaust emissions for diesel as well as petrol engines has been around for years, but it appears that here in the UK with the older diesel engines a smoke test will do at an MOT test, who cares that they omit more harmful gases than a petrol engine.. which now has been recently confirmed.
 
If there's no data on what the emissions were at the time of manufacture - 300Tdi engines pre-date Govt emissions data records - no gauge (no matter how clever or expensive) will be able to tell if the emissions devices originally fitted are still fitted/operating correctly.

The changes to the MOT (enacted in Feb 2014) only require a visual check that originally fitted equipment is still fitted. I've not seen anything from VOSA about requiring MOT testing stations to have new emissions testing equipment next year.
