Hi all, i'm new to this forum, and I am here because i am stuck. I can fix a lot of engine problems but this one has myself and friend stumped.
My 300 tdi has been sitting for 16 years and has 100,000 on the clock. Non egr model and no cat. New battery and started first kick, but the brake master cylinder was stuck. (freed off and fine) Next job was cosmetic, body filler and paint, new door rubbers, led lights, and new cam/auxilliary belt. Tried for an MOT but failed on knackered vacum pump, drove home and ordered new pump.(replaced).......Then the problems started, in fairness the engine was not running 100%, but on start up after the vacum pump change, i could only rev to approx 1800 rpm and a lot of blue smoke was seen, once or twice it cleared then its back to the same again.
I have since checked the fuel lines from the tank, changed the lift pump, changed the fuel filter, checked fuel is pumping through to the IP inlet banjo, checked fuel boost pin is free and diaphram, checked pipe tp IP from turbo is clear, checked turbo is working, intercooler is a new allisport, slackened each injector on tickover and it goes down to 3 cylinders, take off intercooler pipe to engine (makes no difference)...........It drives up to about 30,it is like the engine hits a governor and stops.
What else can i check............or you can just tell me what is wrong. Your experience would be much appreciated.

I like @kevstar 's idea that the w@ste g@te is stuck ... ie no turbo boost ....
Is there pressure getting to the diaphragm on the fuel pump ?
Is the throttle cable fully opening (pulling) the throttle arm on the pump to its stop ?

Drain the 16 year old doozil and put fresh doozil in it.

10 year old doozil on the left, fresh doozil on the right....

Have you checked the injector pump timing?
Is there any black dust at the timing chest drain hole?
What about running your own fuel supply from a can direct to the injector pump bypassing tank lift pump and all the pipes et cetera

Did you remove any other banjo?

i removed both on the filter and checked return to tank

Wont be wastegate, even if it is stuck open the thing will still rev.
With small pipe to ip off, they are as flat as a fart but will eventually get to 50mph, as they simply behave like a n/a 2.5 diesel.

Think fuel, think the smoke you mentioned.

Why was it parked up in the first place?

Have you got a boost gauge ? worth having IMO, and will rule out air leaks and boost leaks from collapsed hoses..

How does the engine sound when you rev it ? does it sound suffocated, or is it lean cutting ?
