So neilly helped with a bit of internet research about turbo outflow pipes and I decided my home made job didn't make the spec required. Purchased new inlet and outflow pipes and fitted them today. The outflow pipe was still wanting to kink. This issue is that I can only tighten the bottom nut of the outflow pipe to block union so much. The 'collar' of the pipe isn't pulled down square and tight, if I do tighten it down fully, when the hose union is pulled square it kinks the pipe. I've taken a picture to show this, but the site isn't loading pictures at the moment. So, I haven't fully tightened that nut. :eek: However, it's low pressure oil coming out through that pipe and I reckon the tapered union part of the pipe will still be sealing on the tapered part of the fitting on the block. Even if the nut rattles free the pipe won't pop off the fitting as it was extremely difficult to force the pipe on to the union anyway. If the nut rattles loose the pipe should just sit there and the oil trickle back in to the sump. Anyway, I doubt very much that it will rattle loose.

Couldn't you get a pipe with rotating couplings made *..... which was just long enough to loop at the side of the sump ? And thus enable it to be fitted without any kink ....Clearly, this would hold a bit of oil, but I can't see any issue with that....

* is there enough clearance with the exhaust ?

I don't know, I haven't thought about going down the getting one professionally made route.
If I could upload the pictures the issue would make more sense. Is it just me or is everyone having a problem with putting images on?

are you sure turbo cartridge isnt rotated slightly to cause misalignment

Ah, I understand what you mean now, James!
If it is, this will be the third turbo with a rotated cartridge. The first two were reconditioned ones. The current one is brand new from Garrett.
I must admit the amount of oil that flows out of the outflow pipe is not massive. You'd think even a kink in the pipe would allow it to get through. Problem is, you can't see how close the kink is nipping because of the protective stainless braid cover. The oil is certainly coming through the turbo in to the induction system though.
I've got my last turbo apart in the garage, is there a reference on the cartridge to match to the housing?
 
no reference i remember from the last one i did slacken the clamp bolts on exhaust side and tap it round

I don't know if once oil has been forced through the rings it's carped for good. Any ideas?
In the meantime I'll see if my current outflow pipe arrangement helps and it stops passing oil. The outflow pipe is as clear through as i can get it now I reckon.

rings as in piston?

It looks like you can rotate both the cast steel housing by loosening the clamps as James said and also the ally housing after loosening/ removing the large circlip if you had big enough pliers
 
Just replaced my turbo a couple of weeks ago. I did put a thread on here but search function is down so can't post a link.

I had the same problem with the kinking pipe. I just fitted it at the block side first maybe 90 degrees out so when it tightened and twisted it ended up in the right place - took a couple of tries to get it lined up but it worked eventually.

I know what you mean about getting the pipe at the right angle so that when you tighten it, it ends up in the right position. That's not my problem though
