hello I have a 300 tdi just recently bought. when we got the tank was leaking and also full of water and sludge.
we had a new tank fitted, lift pump and fuel filter.
it ran for about 1 month fine.
then.... it started cutting out then if you left it would start again and run fine.
now it will start fine, then run about 1 mile the slowly stop and if i leave it overnight will start straight up!.
i have had the lift pump back of and its working fine pulling fuel through fine and pumps it to the filter and out of the union on the top.
but still it will start and run really well for about 1 mile and then die

check the sedimenter on inside of drivers side rear chassis rail,, it might be pulling fuel but is it enough and has it any air in it as it draws

When it's running how high will it rev ?
If it wont rev above 2500/3000 ether it's the lift pump or your getting air in the system !

It is fine if your drive steady, its when you put your boot down is when it loses power. btw graeme is my father. we have had lift pump off and that is bang on. the turbo is also sound.
do 300tdi have a sediment collector??

Hi Moss
Yes if it's a disco, Stood sat sitting still give it a foot full if it wont rev above 2500/3000 your not getting enough fuel !!
Have you taken the fuel filter off ?? If you do it should be FULL if it's not then I suspect that you've either got fuel blockage or starvation or your sucking air somewhere !
Seddy bowl drivers side chassis behind rear wheel , cut pipes & bypass
Have you got a compressor if so you can blow pipes back to tank, think there's a filter in tank that may be full of crap

Just because the lift pump works (as in pumps fuel) it doesn't mean all is ok.
I've just tracked down my bad running to the lift pump pulling in air.
I knew air was in the system as the filter was not full of fuel, a clear pipe added from lift pump to injection pump showed air bubbles,
after replacing the fuel line from tank to lift pump (bypassing sedimenter) I still had air, so I ran a temp supply in clear pipe to lift pump, no air going in but air coming out.
A new lift pump is on order.

Cheers Steve
been on holiday for a bit so gonna try and sort it this week. if i have any problems Ill keep you posted

thanks for the advice

Yeh that's fairly obvious TBH but a defender 90 300tdi doesn't have a sedimenter.
will do

Right sorted the fuel starvation problem, another issue now. when it has been run and for a long journey and turned off it wont start again, any ideas on this one, if you leave for 1hr or so if fires up again no probs,

anybody come across this one before.

Hi moss69
Have you tried hot wire to your stop start solenoid ?
Take it for a run so you know it's not going to start ! then get wire from battery & connect it to stop /start on your pump & see if it starts !
