My cam belt went today, looked under the rocker cover and three of the rockers have busted.
Is it worth just replacing the head or the whole engine.
What over damage could it have done.

Just replace the broken bits, bent pushrods, new cambelt kit and you should be driving again. They're tough old engines unlike modern ****e. Good luck. :)

I'd pull the head and make sure the valve stems haven't bent, and that the valves themselves are ok. Good excuse to give the top end an overhaul if it hasn't been done for a while - decoke, new seats, valve stem seals etc.

Otherwise I'd agree with ^^^, keep the engine, they're tough old lumps :)

I had this happen once on a TDi 300 and it was fixed very easily and cheaply.

I had to replace three rockers, 3 pushrods and a couple of the little pastels that go on top of the valves.

Ran perfectly afterwards for thousands of miles.

PS Total cost of repair parts was approx £25.

They are tough old engines, that is true :) But, .... why did your belt "go"??

Good luck bro :)

Doubt it as they face directly down they tend to just slap the piston crown and bust a rocker arm and or bend a push rod, I have managed to straighten them out ina vice before now and that engine ran happily for another 100,000 miles with another 2 cam belt changes.

Can I replace the timing belt in car without removing the rad and bumper, also thinking what over jobs would be good to do whilst I'm in there.

I agree with above, remove the rad, not the bumper, maybe while there replace the water pump and p gasket if its leaking......be prepared for broken studs on the pump tho
Also replace all other belts and maybe all rad hoses but where does it end!

For gods sake remove the rad man, it takes exactly one slip and then it aint just a broken timing belt, gets expensive when you cut corners, I have seen some putting cardboard in front but for what time it takes to remove and the fact that you have to drain down the coolant it makes sense to remove it coz even corrugated cardboard aint that tough :p

My 300 tdi belt went when I was towing a car trailer with car on it, at 55mph smashed 3 rockers and bent every push rod, replaced them and the belt and its been fine, and like everybody says remove te rad

got the rad out replaced the rocker shaft but cant get the bloody dog nut off,i'll have to wait till mon now when my hand impact wrench arrives.

Put a strong bar on the 27mm nut on the crank, rest it on the passenger side of the chassis and flick the starter and it should undo the nut.

You don't have to remove much to get the rad out of the way, take the top rail off and top hose and then just lift it on top of the engine out of the way

Put a strong bar on the 27mm nut on the crank, rest it on the passenger side of the chassis and flick the starter and it should undo the nut.

Also remember to disconnect the stop solenoid as well otherwise it can run on if yours is a good starter that is

Ok tried to get the Bxxstard nut off using "the starter method" no joy it broke my wrecking bar so with the arrival of the the hand impact wrench still no joy HELP!!!!!
