Hey peeps got a question, LR90 has had a 200tdi conversion,

Was under her yesterday and noticed that there is a flanged ( not sure if its the bell housing to gearbox or to engine )

Anyways there is what appears to be 3 bolt holes along the bottom which had nowt in them, Is this right ????

I will try and get pics later cheers

Get ready for your very own oil leak.
When the engine is in a disco there are 4 bolts that go through gearbox housing, then through the flywheel housing then into the sump ladder frame, the alloy bit between the sump and the engine block, all to do with stiffness and these bolts make it solid.
You are meant to drill and adapt the flywheel housing and also drill and tap the new stud holes, the reason you do this is to stop the bottom of the flywheel housing flexing and allowing the oil to leak from the back of the block.rear main assy.
There are already small pilot holes for the new studs that are easy to drill and tap out.
But i think in your case i would leave it until it leaks if ever, then sort it out., its not hard just hassle.

Im getting the feeling that who ever did this conversion was a bit of a botch artist lol, Il get some pics as there is a few bits i need clarity on lol, She doesnt drink oil which is good and ive driving over 1000miles so far

I think a lot of people dont do the flywheel bolt mod
Good news if its not leaking

I'm intrigued by this, as I've got an oil leak coming out of my bell housing. Again it was a RRC 200tdi conversion.

It's not a lot of oil, but enough to make me want to sort it!

I'm gonna have a look for some missing bolts. Is it a gearbox out job, or is it a pretty easy fix?

with bolts left out its no more likely to leak from behind flywheel housing as 2.5 na or td,flywheel housing has 8 x other bolts holding it to block

I can't see how a few missing bolts there is going to cause an oil leak. More likely your rear crank seal will seep and oil will drip out of the wading plug hole which unless it's a big leak isn't a problem either.

See this is wht confuses me. I have taken the wading plug out and it is as dry as a bone! Yet, it leaks like crazy out of the bellhousing area! (When I say crazy - oil puddle prob the size of a 10p when I leave her parked up over night).

It's just annoying. Sorry to hi jack the thread!

they can leak from 2 x places rear main out of wading plug between block and flywheel housing ,joints around rear main brg, which a 200 tdi gasket will cure with bottom cut off for earlier than 200 engines

Sorry to bring this topic back to the top again, however today I had a crawl underneath my 90.

I too have these 3 bolts "missing" and I have a small, but noticeable amount of oil dripping out of the joint, which is rate annoying.

How do I rectify this problem? I got a mate to put the engine in for me last year, so I'm unsure whts wht, when it comes to gearbox/bellhousing/engine mating!

Please note that I have taken the wading plug out and put my little finger in there and it is as dry as a bone with no signs of oil.

the 3 bolts wont make a difference to that remove engine gearbox ,replace gasket between flywheel housing and block ,its allways been common place to leak usually not too much just stain on road,

So basically, unbolt the gearbox from the engine, move gearbox back, new gasket between flywheel housing and block, and bolt back together. Please tell me that this isn't an engine out job! :(

Do I not bother about the 3 bolts that are missing? I just can't be bothered with this reoccurring in say 3 months down the line...

ive fitted them with bolts missing for 15 years first ive seen of it been a problem lrs allways had the tendency to leak through rear main joint, 200 gasket helped but we are going back 18 years ,maybe it needs new one ,gearbox out engine in,dont worry about those 3 bolts you will see there are 8 bolts securing flywheel housing to block 4 bolts securing gear box to flywheel housing would be enough

Right, that's another item on my "shopping list".

1 x 200tdi flywheel housing to block gasket.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated.

I'm so glad it's not the rear main oil seal! Would I be correct in saying that if it was the oil seal, then oil would be dripping out my wading plug?

The oil could be comin' from anywheres. Have a scout around the engine area tae check fur leaks. It might be that summit up front (or above as said) will work it's way backwards and possibly collect around yer bell housin';)
