As it the ecu that controls the "stepper" i'd now start there by getting it pluged in for a look-see.

thanks discool, I have been wandering wether to get it plugged, got someone in our club with a hawkeye, see if that throws anything up. or will it have to go on testbook?

testbook can do it but sometimes wont coms with the ecu i have the original 14cux tester because of this issue.
throttle position swithc is a fave so to is a afm fault as well.
for all the simple bits of 14 cux when it is not happy it still needs a fault read to see and a live data test to see if everything is doing what it should

well to be honest apart from the ecu, the AFM and throttle pot is pretty much the only things left to change. Without the test gear its hard to rule things out and i have already forked out on a stepper motor that was okay anyway. Got a local independent looking at it next week, I'll report the findings!!

Also the ecu has a wire to tell it it is in or out of gear from memory at a dodgy p5conversion I looked at that stalled out

well just looking for the part numbers for the throttle pot. the diagram shows a gasket (ERR4944) now i know mine doesnt have one and i did think it should. Could this be letting in air and therefore messing up the vacumn and stuff?

That is a possibility although a bit thin. Take stepper off and apply a small amount of RTV and put it back on, that should at least work as a temporary test/fix.

the stepper is new and came with gasket, and torqued to 20nm as per haynes. stepper has been cleaned and made no difference. Britcar want 61p for the gasket a £4 p+p. looks like an old job card gasket will be made!!

joe, sorry to drag this up again, but I have exactly the same problem since i bought mine, I have recently done the base idle 100 times!, engine oil changed and stripped plenum to do the rocker gaskets cleaned reassembled etc. new stepper motor, drop in revs still there, approx 300 revs, i put into N rev up, then into drive. I have found to up the idle to 1000 gets rid, but i think its just hiding an isse.

did you resolve yours?

how did you up the idle, base idle re set or just on the cable?

base idle, as per haynes and on here. blocked off the plenum pipe and turned the allen screw till revs about 500 etc. the result was a lovely idle at 750ish when restarted.

but still started with bumpy 300 revs. steps up to 1500 then back down to 750,, however engaging D or R in this idling means back to bumpy 300 revs or sometimes a stall.

Cable is set perfect as far as slack in the linkage goes i.e 1.5mm or so

The so called gasket is only a large fibre washer was it not :)

quite right, it is a large fibre washer as you rightly pointed out!! :clap2:

but the throttle pot "gasket" is a gasket and is still not there!!:5bcheers2:

well mine was similar on my old 3.9, due to high miles no love (before I had it) a probably stretched timing chain etc. I had changed the tps dizzy amp stepper and afm and they were set properly but in the end with timing and base idle play the best we could get was about 500 ish rpm and it did come close to stalling on a hot day when put in gear sometimes, especailly with the steering on full lock. although it did always start with a rev rise and more so when cold.

mines on 95,000 genuine miles, ex city car never seen a blade of grass. full history from Matlock dealer. I bought her in dec. previous owner said he just lived with it.

ive seen and lse with 40k FLRSH and the engine was full of black sludge and one cam lobe had almost worn away completly. its the city work that fooks them up I think!

I would buy a faultcode reader from ebay for the 14 cux they are only £50

14CUX ECU fault code reader TVR Range Rover Land V8 | eBay

it will make your life nice and easy and save a fortune in paying so called experts to do the same thing and then over charge you for fookin up your car or telling you its fine when its not.

has your motor got cats fitted?

bitter?

yes how did you guess :p, dont trust any so called landrover mechanics ever- waste of money, better off doing it yourself or even just getting jo blogs garage to do simple mechanical work.

do all my own work on the landy now bar mot tests, its always given the time and attention it needs for a 40 year old motor and no bull**** "thats how it should be" or being charged for half a job!

dummy spat, lol :p
