Hey everyone, after owning everything from a disco 1 to a disco 4, I'm looking at getting a range rover sport. Just wondered on what people's opinions are on which engine to go for?
I've heard horror stories about the tdv8 turbos being so unreliable, is it as bad as people make out?
Is it worth getting the 2.7 or will I regret not getting the bigger engine and having the extra power?
 
"Petrol more reliable"? You jest. The electronics on ALL of them are prone to failure

Difference between electronic failure or electronic failure plus snapped crank / blown turbos / leaky inlet manifold / snapped fuel pump belt / oil pump casing letting go catastrophically.

The difference is the mechanical failures are easy to fix, if expensive, the electronic failures are sometimes nigh on impossible to fix and very expensive. Current JLR products are only viable if bought new and changed every 2/3 years while under warranty.

Couldn't agree more on that. That is what puts me off anything newer than a p38, that and the rust.
 
Both the 2.7tdv6 and the 3.0tdv6 are prone to cranks snapping.
Have a search in the jag forums.
Bloody lovely engine, smooth as silk and almost silent in the s type but as I say, beware broken cranks.
 
There are loads of petrol ones out there and on lpg you'll easily match if not beat diesel cost per mile.
The ajv8 4.4 is the best combo in my opinion.

I don't doubt your expertise at all, but why would a V6 snap a crank, bloody thing is only 3 cylinders in length :confused:
 
It's a very compact engine and one of the webs is very thin.
There is some discussion that the oil pump fails, causes starvation and the shell wraps round, siezes and shears the Web off.

I'm struggling to remember but there's a guy on ebay who buys them up, rebuilds them at work (he's a Landy mechanic) and then flogs them on. He reckons he does about 3 a week.

I think he said the engine was so tight they used no fasteners and the bearing was just pressed in. I'm not sure about the oil pump but something happens and the bearing starts spinning and welds itself to the crank. After the bearing has seized the crank snaps.

Apparently in Germany all the cars are done under warranty but in the UK Land Rover are still pretending there is no issue. A Russian guy did a root cause analysis and there's a paper somewhere on the web. @gstuart knows where.

many are now starting to fit this oil pump , alas with it being so new there hasn’t been any evidence of it stopping the cranks from snapping , time will tell
