Anyone who knows how to get this approved? I have the engine, and want to get this approved either from LR or Tüv. Have spoken with Volvo cars here in Norway and they will not give me any papers that this engine will be ok in this type of car. Do anyone know someone that has done this and have the papers from Land Rover that they can approve it?

Who can help me with the right contact in the Land Rover system that can give me these papers??

Send me mail, SMS or fax with help, and you will be awarded!! $$

Is the 3.0 M57 engine a Volvo engine?

Are you expecting Land Rover or Volvo to approve the use of this engine in a P38? Are you having a laugh?

I take it you have to do this sort of thing in Norway if you change the engine to a different type?

M57 is the same engine as TD6.
Would like to get this into my P38. Cant see why they cant give out a statment that this engine also can be used in P38. But, in Norway it is fuc....ing Volvo that has all sales and service of LR. Thats why i had to ask them.. So, my question is if someone here can help me with the right contact to get this approved..

Yes, that was my tought too... I have bought all parts, and started to bouild up my RR from scratch again. This time with RR Sport front lights, grille and bumper. The plan is L322 rear lights and bumper also. (cannot use Sport rear because of the angle of the lights and the missing "Tea table" rear hatch)
In order to complete the rebuild i need to upgrade the oilburner also, and the M57 BMW engine is the same as the original M51 but with more power and common rail. This would be perfect in this car, but i would need to make a whole new engine harness to get this to work.

Biggest problem i see for now is to get a paper from LR that says its ok to put this engine into P38. Cant see why not, since they use it in L322 witch has the same frame, brakes and EAS system...

Would anyone help me to get in touch with the right person in the LR system? If i get this to work i will produce complete kits for this setup..

It just ain't gonna happen. Land Rover are not going to give you a piece of paper to say the TD6 can be fitted into the P38.

Why not get a Stage 2 tune-up for the M51, that will give you the same/more power than the TD6 anyway, and that is at least possible without spending twice what the car is worth.

Hmmm.... maybe Land Rover wont, but there is another way also.. I already have the engine++ and it is possible to get this approved without LR. I will have to find all info myself, but when its done its done...

Just as info, a P38 cost £10-15000 in norway...

Stage 2 tune-up? I already have done what can be done with the M51. It cannot stand more power than >200hk/hp. If you pull out more, you will have to rebuild the whole engine.. A M57 can be tuned to 230hk/hp & 540NM without too much trouble...(ECU flash)

Since the M51 & M57 is almost the same engine, it should not be so damn hard to get this approved..

hey
just to make a small follow up ..

did the m57 ever get into the car and have wee got a manula for it ...

kin hell..old thread or what??you bored going through old threads????

Someone is officially doing 2.7's from the D3 into P38, link was posted here a few weeks back.

Re the OP, I cant think of a reason why you would tell anyone about changing the engine. Its going to take a keen investigator to spot that the M57 is not an M51. IMHO it would only factor into a legallity if it was proven that the altered engine contributed to an accident. The only way this would happen is if you were driving too fast in the first place, in which case you're in the same situation as a person being done for dangerous driving.

Great project but without being rude, be prepared to replace gearbox often with all that torque.

You could maybe use a ZP4HP24 as fitted in the 4.6

Hi!
Yes, the engine has been in the car. I have to weld the oilsump to make it fit over the P38 axle (EAS+Diff..)
Engine has been fitted to the gearbox, and everything else has been modified to fot into the enginebay of P38. I have to do more work on the electronics. The company that is fitting TDV6 into a P38 have been interested in my project since the P38 has BeCM that are almost impossible to work with. To start the engine is not a big problem, but to get instruments and gearbox to work together with the engine is not that easy. I am doing this on a P38 with manual gearbox at first, but working on a system for the automatic as well. Since we have 8 P38 we have a luxury problem with parts and test equipment. (T4+Faultmate Extreme)

If anyone is interested, i could post updates more often.?

If anyone has some L322 electronics and harness parts, please contact me.. One sollution could be to use some of the L322 harness components to get the correct signals..

I'm sure many bimmer specialists in germany could do that.
After all if it's possible to fit a V10 in a M3 E30, what can't be achieved...

I don't really see the problem. You can tune or re-engine a car as much as you like, so long as you don't increase the power beyond what was available in the top-of the line model of the same vehicle. I.e. if you bought a BMW320d, you may retrofit a 3L petrol so long as you also do the required upgrades on brakes and suspension and pay the power- and displacement tax. It takes some paperwork, but it can definitely be done. On the RR, the top of the line was the Overfinch so you have plenty to go on power-wise.
That being said, the two engines you want to swap are so similar that I'd do the conversion and keep it to myself. It would never be discovered, and if it were (in the event of an accident), your insurance company would have to "prove" that the increased power caused the accident. This is highly relevant for boy-racers in 350bhp Nissan 200sx's, but I can't see it entering the equation for a RR. You're simply bringing it up on a par with the 4.6 which has the same brakes and suspension.

Go ahead - it would make a good car if you can get the electronics to communicate.

Hi Henrik,

I don't know in which country you live but it's not as simple from the law of the country point of view.

I know UK is the country of kit cars, modified cars and swaps because the legislation permits it...you guys are so lucky:cool:

Here in France and even Germany, we've a very severe MOT. (either french DREAL or German TUV)

Basically, anything modified should pass a test certificate as any new model of vehicule released on the market (not the MOT inspection). No matter top of the range has 100hp more and same components (that's often not true, bigger brakes and stiffer suspension)

And you can't pass that kind of test if you've gone too far in modification. Like fitting a diesel engine instead of a petrol one, fitting a V8 petrol instead of a V6 OR even fitting a tiny 4 cylinders instead of a V12 (who would do that ;))

They don't even care about the power of the block...or if you upgraded other components to handle that much power.
Assholes french administration:D

I believe that in Germany, if the special component has the TUV certificate. It is ok to mount it on the car without passing full car inspection. At least, it's the way tuners such as Alpina or Brabus works...

Speaking of Overfinch, it's a modified car. Never released by Land Rover...
I know because i'm interesting by one of those but will never get any certificate in France.

Then there's only one thing to do : living with the risk and do the mods so the insurance expert can't see anything different...
