I think the tappit gaps where larger and needed adjusting.... Didnt realy know much about them till recently now that ive read up on it... Will be settin them proply wen i reasemble

difficult to tell from picture the spring caps often have marks as such but in your pic it could look cracked ,valve stem head should feel smooth with no raised areas if it has it would want replacing as once hard facings worn they can wear at an alarming rate

Well back together seems to be running great..... One thing though, gettin smoke from the filler cap now does this mean ive done a crap job on the head gasket?

Considerable, seems to have some presseure behind it. Yes got water in engine durin removal, so could just be that im hopein... You mean the 120 betwwen gaps on piston ringsclose enough

rings should be spaced sp no gap is on the thrust side ie passenger side ,you should remove block drain plug on side just in front of exhaust down pipe, tappets set correctly and all adjuster threads above the nut similar ,probably just engine drying out

Nice post - Tapping is really frustrating - I had same on my 300tdi.
Went through everything
Lift pump
Vacuum pump
Tappets
Exhaust gasket
Valve stem caps.
In the end it was the Head gasket leaking on Number 4 - Could feel it chuffing when I put my hand down the side of the engine!!
