Right so ive got the head off now, nothin wrong with valves all looks inorder no signs of anything bad. I know the timing is right atleast for the fuel pump.... So am i now lookin at a broke piston ring?
I think a broken ring can make a ticking sound, not seen it myself tho. Do the bores seem to be in good condition?

Valve stem caps can wear through, that will open your tappet gap's. I read that you have it to bits now, so you will be resetting the rockers when your done. Check the caps for wear before you do.

Mine started 'tapping' and a heavy breathing sound could be heard from the air cleaner... No. 4 Rocker set had opened quite a lot.. resetting cured the noise. :)

Lip at the top, how much bad news is that?
Depends on how deep it is. The lip is basically the amount the bore has worn. Also sometimes the top ring can hit the lip and break. If there is a lot of wear you may get piston slap, which can make a knocking noise.

Yeah will be redoin tappits, hopefully should make some difference to.the sound, but doesnt account for loss of power and all the smoke i dont think. Im gona pull the pistons on saturday and check the rings, then ill just reasemble and fingers crossed

So would tappets bein out also give ya plooms of smoke and bad startin? Its hard to pinpoint the moise cant realy here with ya head under the bonnet youv gota be stood abit away from the engine till ya hear it then its very clear

if far out it means valve opening is delayed and gas movement is restricted can give smoke and crank case pressure

it looks a little like valve cap has had top worn off leaving a collar around valve stem presume there was a large-ish gap
