Due to the fact that the 200tdi in my Defender 110 is a rather poor conversion from the original 2.4 petrol, the starter motor is in a very tight position. After many hours work I've managed to get all 3 bolts undone that hold it in place but can't seem to find a way to remove it. Its the solenoid I need to look at so getting it out is essential. I've removed the down pipe and another joiner piece of exhaust piping coming off the manifold, but can't seem to get it either up nor get it down, the gap between the chassis and the engine block is just a little too small. Any suggestions? Without removing most of the exhaust manifold or bulkhead.

Had to change mine in my 200 converted 90 take the inlet and exhaust manifold off
Its a pain and a bit fiddly but only way you will get enough room
