hi all, have serviced the old girl today and ran into a small head scratching moment.

I have a 90 with the fender 200 (turbo up top and horizontal(ish) tractor type air filter)

All the filters etc were Britpart and fitted perfectly until it came to filling back up with oil.

It only took 3.5/4 litres of oil to reach the top "full" line on the dipstick - i was under the impression that these engines required a lot more oil than this? I have let the filter fill up etc and its still showing as "full"

Do i have the wrong dipstick??? im a little confused.com. Every time that i checked the oil over the past few months the dipstick has always read above full by 3inches but i thought that was down to the stick fouling the tube on its way out.

Any thoughts on my situation please?

Thanks
Henra

Here are there exact oil capacities for the 200tdi as specified in the Workshop Manual. One question I should ask is whether or not you thoroughly drained the sump before re-filling the oil. A seemingly daft question I know, but it's a good place to start! If the sump was fully drained, you should have been able to fit around about 6 litres into the engine and then a little more in the new oil filter. It is possible that something solid or a lump of gunge / sediment has become lodged in the sump plug, preventing a few litres from draining.

Thanks for the reply, i checked the old oil as i drained it into a drum. best part of 6 litres came out which prompted me to post up on here.

I'm more than confused about the whole situation and the only thought is that i have the wrong dip stick, i turned the engine over and the oil light came on in the dash. Turned it off imediately and added more oil. I'm back up to 6 litres now, just going to mark the dipstick myself for future reference i think.

Sounds like you may well have the wrong dipstick then. If 6 litres came out, then 6 litres will certainly go back in. Do take precaution however, if you over fill it, this is what will happen:

This should provide a more accurate oil reading. I'm fairly certain that the discovery (same application as range rover) and the defender 200tdis used the same sump pan:

thanks very much for your help on the matter, ive not run it apart from when initially filling it up. I will return it to 5.5 litres and add a little at a time to suit.

Thanks

Thought i would update this thread so if anyone else has the same problem it may help.

After a lot of pondering i decided to remove the dipstick tube to fit a new one, as i removed the tube the olive fell off the bottom. It had moved in the block allowing the tube to fall in lower than it should. New olive - spot on oil level!!
