Sounds like there is not enough fuel getting into her?

Did you check the banjos as suggested earlier on?

If that is straight out from manifold it may sound a lot different from normal , it may be the engine needs a proper exhaust on to run proper , I have had holes in car exhaust box years ago and a lot of power lost
There will be some clever exhaust peeps on here with more experience than me

Okay I mean we got the old exhaust so no harm in trying and seeing if it is any difference we did think the exhaust could make it sound different

Doesn’t actually matter with a turbo’d engine as the turbo creates all the back pressure the engine needs - more critical on a petrol motor

Just installed a replacement 300 tdi to my 90 (hadnt heard it run before I bought it)

Il had a similar problem to yours, bad starting and rough at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle

I advanced to pump timing slightly and problems solved

Next problem. We found out the woodruff key is gone. Which could be causing the problem. Like I said I’m not great with the mechanics I can do the basics ish :p but my mates are a lot better. So this is the state of the woodruff key or what’s left. Not really sure where to go from here now

this is a pic of mine on rebuild to compare with, looks like wear in the toothed wheel and end of woodruff key worn off so prob the bottom pulley slipping making that mess,,
So as above remove the toothed wheel inside of that it’s prob ok as damage just on outside , new woodruff key and wheel should sort it as long as pulley wheel not too damaged

Is that replaceable? All of that

if the crank is damaged then the engine is essentially scrap unless you can rebuild it with a new crank.

this is what mine looked like when I did my timing belt earlier this year. As you can see mine is undamaged and yours has a lot of damage.

Looks to me like someone has used a punch to hammer in something that isn’t a woodruff key??
