Hi,
Recently I fitted a egt gauge and probe kit from Fourby and seem to be getting inaccurate temp readings. I can only manage to get around 370c on full chat in 5th gear, is this normal?
I’ve read on a few forums saying that the max you want is around 700c and that I can’t get anywhere close seems like a gauge inaccuracy.
I’m running a defender with a disco 200tdi and a 300tdi turbo with the probe fitted to the egr blanking plate if that helps anyone.
Just want to know if 370c normal or the gauge is faulty.
Thanks

have you asked fourby? or used an infra red temp probe?

How well "tuned" is it? What boost are you running? What type of surface was your test run, gradient, motorway etc,.?

+1 - I have an EGT gauge on my 300Tdi D1 - but it is tuned - was originally 164 - but this gets silly - the temps rise too quickly.. now 145 and the temps are manageable, and reasonably predictable ... still got to be careful though - Cyl head will anneal at 720 = very bad :( - 650 is my absolute limit, which you can reach climbing a steepish hill at speed... (A55 at Rhualt)

I have an acquaintance who tuned his to 200 ... but it all went horribly wrong, due not watching the gauge ..... the 300Tdi is very capable of this power output ... but cooling becomes rather critical ... and proper warm up and cool down procedures are essential IMHO.

thermocouple is in the same place as yours - but it has to be well inside the flow of gases to give an accurate reading in a short time, as there is a delay for it to warm up, and then a further shorter delay for the gauge to catch up.....

These engines left the factory in a low state of tune to stop end users annealing the heads ... 370 seems a bit low for standard, 450 would be closer IMHO...

Hi,
Only fitted it this weekend so I’ll give them a call Monday, I’ll try a temp probe and see if I get similar results.

It’s got a slightly bigger intercooler and the 300tdi turbo but apart from that nothing. No tweaks to the injection pump as far as I’m aware. I’ve got 0.9bar of boost on my boost gauge so that’s pretty normal. The test run was on B roads of different gradients accelerating from 30 to 60/65, I did this a few times and got the same results.

Thanks for the quick replies

the 200 will take a bit more boost than the 300 - a web search will tell you how much more ... IIRC, 3 or 4 psi more ? ( check that  )... or it could go horribly wrong ;)

I've got a full width IC, and a properly ( rolling road ) tuned FIP .... It is more than capable of cooking the head if I were to let it .....

I’ll probably leave the boost alone for now, not feeling that confident yet.

I’ll do a motorway run today and see what happens

I fitted an EGT gauge to my 110, but didn’t get a real chance to test it. I haven’t done much in terms of tuning, just “tweaked” the bits under the diaphragm a little (can’t remember exactly). My initial EGT was low, not as low as yours is reading, but low 400s. I initially thought my gauge/probe was faulty, so borrowed a calibrated reader and tested it. I set it so my reader was reading the same at ambient, say 5-8 degrees. Then again at tick over after a steady drive. I think it was around 95-105degrees. It doesn’t really matter, so long as the calibrated reader is the same as your displayed readings.

On a hill after the “tweak” I could get around 450-480degrees. I don’t have any black smoke at all, so once it’s back on the road and driving reliably, I will give it another tweak and get it closer to 600. I don’t want to go nuts as I do a lot of towing of the folding camper in summer.

Just did my motorway run, managed to squeeze 420c out of it.

Still low but a little relieved with what your findings mick, haven’t touched the pump yet but probably will

I would test it on a hill before you go adjusting it really. Sitting on a motorway, even a long uphill won’t put much stress on the engine. I’m quite lucky in that I live on a hillside, and have access to at least 3 really steep hills. 1 is too short to test on if I’m being honest.

The non contact IR probe can give very strange results, certainly not something I would trust unless I had verified using a in flow probe or surface probe to give a reference to go back to.

What did fourby say?

I use a similar set up and get much higher tempps than that on the 300tdi, boost at 19PSi and pump slightly tuned with pin and ring fitted.

Cheers

I had an egt gauge in a std td5 and max load/tmep was pretty much 650 degc, when tuned it would pull close to a 1000 degc, it liked manifolds and cracking turbos!

I dont know about temps but Ive seen a 300tdi with a 200 defender turbo, big intercooler and tweeked boost and pump and the turbo was red!! Looked good in the dark. Still went ok for months until he crashed it :)
